refrigerant is probably getting too low and is tripping the short cycle switch if we have one

Maybe you need to give your A/c blower a friendly tap. Its right behind the Glove box you can feel it.

there is a three way pressure switch on top of the drier which is under the battery/relay unit on the drivers side behind the headlight. it will turn the compressor off if there is not enough pressure to keep it safe.

Sounds like a vacuum problem to me. The car's vacuum is used to route the HVAC air through the system to the right vents. My moms Volvo has this problem, and whenever you go above 15% throttle the A/C cuts out until you back off on the throttle some (thus creating vacuum).

Thanks to alll for your comments. I took the car

to the dealer as it was malfunctioning. It turned out that the refrigerant was way too low and there is a safety switch on the compressor. It has been working since Thursday, this is good because the
Bay Area has been very hot.

Well, it's fixed ... but it could be too high as well. My car's that way now. I'll have to borrow an HVAC gauge from work and check the FSM.
