97 Maxima GLE mods

Hi everyone,

I am a proud new owner of a 97 Maxima GLE and need some information. What is the best place to get OEM parts for this car? Also, where can I get aftermarket parts?

My impression of the car is that it’s relatively fast, with good pull from almost all revs. The brakes vibrate a little, so I think I’m going to need the rotors turned or replaced. The suspension is OK, good for a round town and cruising, but floaty when driven hard. That brings me to my next set of questions.

I’m looking for a spring/shock combination for this car. I know the SE has different springs and shocks, but is the SE lower as well? I noticed that all the spring/shock numbers for the GLE are the same as the SE. I’m looking to lower the car as LITTLE as possible, but want to increase the spring rates by 10-25%. I also want adjustable shock so I can control the front/rear balance.

Below is the list of springs I am looking at and the drop according to shox.com:

Eibach Pro-Kit (lowers ~1.5”)
B&G (lowers ~1.6”)
H&R (lowers ~1.4”)

Which of these really lowers the car the least and how much stiffer is each over stock? I also notices there is a Ground Control coil over kit that lowers the car anywhere from 0-3”. Is this true and if so, can I use any set of shocks with these? How much stiffer are the Eibach springs over stock that come with this setup?

The shocks I’m looking at are:

KYB AGX
Tokico Illumina

From what I’m reading, the AGX’s are stiffer than the Illumina’s. I had the AGX’s on my old Sentra SE-R with the stock springs and larger sway bars and the car was pretty stiff. Any preferences?

So I’m looking for places to buy EOM and aftermarket parts and the best spring/shock combination that provides the least drop and isn’t bone jarring. Please include any personal experiences that you may have. If I have forgotten any springs or shocks, let me know.

BTW, I have the GLE with a 5 speed. Is this as fast as the SE? It seems the gearing is a little higher than I expected.

Thanks for all the help.
