what does overdrive do ?

what does overdrive do ?

can someone explain to me exactly what overdrive actually does ? i read in another post that it just engages/disengages the 4th gear but it wasnt too clear. my dad says he feels the car is faster with overdrive lol. i highly doubt it but can someone explain ? thanx

locks out 4th gear so basically you only have 3 forward gears. it will be faster on the highway since it wont allow it to shift into 4th.

Also, when O/D is OFF, the torque converter will lock up in 3rd gear. In third gear, RPMs will be lower than if O/D was ON (unlocked torque converter).

Yeah, it does not give you more power. Say you were going up a long hill, you would turn OD off so your transmission would not continuously jump from 3rd and 4th. If you are driving in the city, just leave OD on, so your tranny has 4 gears to go through and save you gas.
