Fire in the engine bay!!! alternator to blame!!!

ahh!!

i am soooo upset! here i was driving home from the beach with my air cond. on and my system blaring when i hit triffic. i was stuck for a good hour and i was finally happy to go over 20mph for a change so i floored it for the rest of the way home. i dropped off my girlfriend and i headed to autozone to pick up some wax. so when i got there i turned down my stereo and i heard a weird sound from my engine, so i popped the hood. i imeadiately smelt something burning and the engine was making a "rrrrrnnn rrrrrnnnn rrrrrnnn" sound that increased with the rev's of the engine. so i took it home and drove slowly... when i reached home i popped the hood angain and the smell was there 10 times worse.

so my first thought was it was the alternator because of the recall. so i decided to tow it to nissan and get it checked out. 3 days later i get a call and the guy says "boy you are so lucky you got it here when you did because you alt. is completly fried." "if you would have even drove you car your car here you definetly would have had a fire in your car. in fact, it was so bad you melted and burned the harness that plugs into the alt.!!!"

so to make a long story not as long becuase it is already pretty long... the alt is covered under the recall, but the harness is not. i my eyes i think it is messed up, but hey they had to make money off of me somehow. thats my story and thanks for letting me vent.

yeah i know i should have, but you know how it goes... you don't want to give up your car for 2 days, and it is hard to find rides everytwhere, and there is always the problem with fitting it in with my work sched.

Let me get this straight. The alternator was covered by the recall, and they told you the harness that burnt up because of their faulty part was not? BS. If a faulty part covered under warranty or recall causes a non-covered part to fail, then that part is covered, too. I'd talk to the service manager, and if that fails, complain to Nissan USA. Also, since most dealerships belong to their local BBB, I'd complain to them, too. Not to mention the Chamber of Commerce, NHTSB (for the recall), and anyone else who'd listen. You can even write a letter to the editor of your local paper and relate your experience (only true statements or else it can be construed as defamation). Good luck.

Right on the money.. Like Dave said - if a part covered under warranty fails and causes another part(s) to fail too - the additional part should be covered too. Like you said - they are tring to make money off of you. call Nissan Customer Service (800) NISSAN-1 and state your case.

when he said that it was not covered i told him it seemed odd that it was not since that it was caused by a recalled part, and he said that only the alt is covered. i was going to make a big fuss about it over the phone but i didn't want them to "take their time" fixing my car, or do a shotty job either... so i had plans of giving them an ear full when i got to pick up the car. i mean the wiring harness is only $30, but it is not the money... it is the fact of the matter. hopefully i will win this battle and get my car back soon so i can sell it and get my 2000 max. i wonder what else is going to go wrong before i sell this car...

i think your argument will be weaker the more you delay it. i am sure if you just called the nissan number, they will agree to have the dealer reimburse at least half of the cost of the harness.

The harness should be covered as well. Go back, make a fuss. Call the 1-800 nissan number. The dealer sounds like a nice guy, but his head isn't screwed on straight.

I will hit your car bumper, the airbags go off. I will only pay to fix your bumper because I didn't touch your airbags. I love the way things work. Hmmm, I have a 95 too, I should check it out.
