tranny drain

is it better to drain the tranny (5spd) from the gear indicator switch or from the drain plug? motorvate said to drain from the switch, but i was looking at the switch and it seemed to be higher than the drain plug. which will drain out more fluid, and what is the nut size for the drain plug?
thanks
charlie

The sensor will drain QUICKLY - like the whole tranny in about 30 seconds. Be ready for it - nearly 2 gallons.

The drain plug is a lot slower. Also, you'll never drain it fully - if you're removing to rebuild it you'll need a drip pan on your workbench when you crack it in half.

2 gallons? I am about to change my fluid this weekend, and my Haynes manual said 9-10 pints, which is 5 qts or 1.25 gallons. Or am I missing something? I hope not, I ordered up 5 qts of Redline MT90, just showed up!

You're prolly right - I know I used about 1/3 of my 5gal drum of GL4. If ur haynes say 9-10 then they're prolly right.

How are you going to fill it? The easiest way I found was to get a funnel with a FAT flexible section and hang the funnel fron the driver's wheel spring with the tuber bent around into the filler hole. I also covered the driver's knuckle/hub assembly with a garbage bag in case I spilled oil on it. Have some brake cleaner handy and rinse the brake disk off before you puty it back together just to be safe.

To fill it, I ordered a cool fluid evacuator/dispenser thing I saw in my Griot's Garage catalog. Pricey, but what the hell, can't have too many tools and such... I am hoping to use this thing to 'inject' the new fluid 1 qt at a time...
