I was thinking of using the Redline 75W90NS Synthetic Gear Oil. Should I use Redline MTL or MT90 instead? Or should I not use Redline at all?

I live a far 18 miles south of Buch434 and just added Redline TRanny fluid. I used 3 qts MTL and 2 MT90 to balance it out. I went to lunch today & it was 4 outside and the car shoifted like it was 80 like butta...

By the way Buch...take a gander at the comments of the Pacesetter catback thread below-I was curious and asked the members about it. Not all are keen but you just can't beat that price!

PS I'd recommend wd-40 the fill/drain bolt at the fornt of the tranny in advance of the fluid change. I would also try and get this bolt loose before you drain the fluid (Mine was EXTREMELY hard to get off and I bench press over 400 lbs-actually broke my ratchet). The drain bolt should come right off...

kartz74, Screaminfast and buch434. What were the symptoms you were noticing before you switched to the synthetics. I have a ’98 I30T with a 5 spd and deal with not only the sluggish shifts but also have difficulty shifting third to second, second to first sometimes become almost impossible when cold, or should I say frigid (seems to be most of this damn winter). Just curious if these are the common problems that the synthetics would take care of. Oh, also, are there any down sides to the switch.

Thanks.

Downside is the hassle/small cost (really not much). We live in IA where it is currently about -2 and -35 with windchill. I left my car outside all day and got it and drove it home like it was 80 outside. The cold no longer affects the shifting (although I still let it warm up B$ reving above 2-3000 rpm). Best of all-now I can shift into 1st when just rolling whreas before I had to stop and double clutch or choose 2nd and lug it... I have bout 100k on my car and figured it was a good maintenance item. FOr $45 or so my tranny should remain maintenance free forever.

kratz74 (sorry about the spelling on the last post), thanks for the reply. Yeah the downshifting into first is my major headache and would be worth the time/effort/money to go with the synthetics if it would cure this. As with you, the temps here have been around the 0 mark far too often this winter (plus a non-heated garage). Thanks again and is Redline the brand of choice?

I know Mobil 1 makes sythetic tranny fluid but it's about the same price as Redline. From the research-both seem excellent with flow at low temps and viscosity maintenance. I used Redline b/c I couldn't find the Mobil 1 in 70-80wt. Remember to lossed the drain/fill plug BEFORE you drain the fluid (learn from my mistake) and that bolt has some stuff on the threads to make sure it doesn't come off. Once that's loose-you're home free!!!

kratz74, thanks for the tip. I'll make certain to use a good sized breaker bar on the drain/fill plug and do that first. Regards and thanks again. I tell you , the worth of this board and the great folks who take the time to answer questions, is just fantastic.
