Lifting Max high enough to get engine out
One question ... How? I'm doing an engine swap this weekend, but i'm wondering how i'm gonna get the engines out. Everyone pretty much says drop the engine out the bottom (although i would assume a cherry picker to lift the engine out the top would be easier, but i guess not?) So the way i figure it to get the engine out the car has to be lifted at least 35 inches in there air (3 feet ppl) how do you do that without a lift? I don't even know where to look for a jack or jackstands that'll hold the car up that high. So somebody help. Any advice, if someone's done this before some details on how they did it would be GREAT!. Thanx

You gotta lift the freakin' hell out of the car to get it high enough to clear the bottom of the car. I had to put my car on jacks in the back and then jacks in the front. But I had to prop the front jacks with 1ft of wood to get the car up high enough. Then when you drop the engine down, unless you have a nice engine jack, I know you will try to let the engine down on the regular jack. Just watch the engine come down, then DROP off the jack. It WILL happen. Then because the jack makes the engine higher, you have to drop in onto some cardboard and then SLIDE the engine out from under the car. This, of course is all down while not accicently knocking the car off the jacks and having it fall the 3-4ft it is in the air.
Still want to drop it?? I highly recommend taking the hood off(or at least undoing the struts and hinging the hood back as far as possible) and removing the engine from up top. In my 3-gen it was WAY easier and I've done engine swaps twice now.
Plus. Didn't we have this conversation ALREADY?

Sounds sooooo much easier. it even looks easier. I'll probably be taking pics the whole time and i'll post them when i'm done with some results...

ok just for the record, when i changed the engine in my car, i was suggested to drop the engine out from the bottom, but that wasnt possible, let me tell you it is very easy actually to pull the engine out from the top, just pull the mounts, loosen up the tranny, slide the engine toward the passenger side and lift..... and it gets in/out real easy.

Yeah that always was the logical way to me, i dunno why the books say from under. Then again they have an actual lift. Bastards!!! =) j/k Well tomorrow is d-day (do it day) so i'll make a new post when i'm done with pics and stuff.

I just pulled my 4th gen motor out and I did it by lifting it out and it was quite easy. I would recommend taking the radiator out and the hood all the way off, both are easy as well. Some places rent engine hoists but I would recommend just buying one from a store like checkers. The one near my house has them for $149.

If you have an auto, then unhook the torque-convertor to flywheel/flexplate bolts, then unbolt the trans bellhousing bolts, then lift the engine away from trans and up.
If you have a stick you *may* have to pull the tranny because you may not have enough clearance to pull the engine away from the tranny enough for the input shaft to clear the pressure plate.
Either way I'm 99% sure you must remove the passenger D/S because a) it's bolted to the engine! and b) you're gonna wind up tilting the tranny a bit to finesse the extraction/installation, and you don't want to stress the shaft.
Support the tranny with a jack for two reasons a) the tranny will fall down otherwise b) (again) you'll prolly need to tilt the tranny up a little to help the engine out/in
