loud bassy sound from the rear

I have a loud bassy sound that gets louder as you drive faster coming from what sounds like the rear. Ive had the car since new...never heard this sound before until i recently had all the brakes done.

Any ideas?? She has 77000 miles on her.

Thanks

Nick

i know its not the muffler bc i can rev her in the drive way and she sounds fine inside the cabin. But i will check again. the sounds reminds me of when your axles are old and worn.

Check your brake calipers (it happened to me at 75K) and rear bearings. To test the calipers, after you hear the noise, try to identify which side is it coming from. stop in the safe place, jack it up and see if the weel rotates freely. If it makes half a turn after you push it, it most likely is ok. Another sign is that after driving more then 10 miles on highway, if you touch the weel, it is really hot, much hotter then the other one. But be careful not to burn your fingers. What happens is that the brakes get stuck and do not release well even if you dont apply any pressure on the pedal.
If it in fact is a caliper, you can try to fix it or buy a remanufactured at Strauss or Autozone for under $150. They recommend to do a pair at the same time, but I only did one and my Max breaks fine for 4 months now. In NY area Strauss had them in stock, and had the best price.

Don't really know how to test bearings without taking off the wheel. You may want to take it off and stuff the bearings with grease anyway.
