For the last month or so, the HP seemed to be reduced, since it started about the same time as the hot weather, I assumed it was all due to the AC draining power. Then about two weeks ago the check engine light came on, but no problems. Now twice this week it wouldn't start. All accessories work (lights, AC, radio, etc) but nothing happens when turning the key. No clicking, no cranking, no turning-over. Then it will start with no problem after a half hour or so.

Took it to the dealer and they say the knock sensor, coolant sensor, starter, and some part in the ignition switch down by the steering column needs replaced. And the damage will be $1100, talked to another service garage and they say $700.

Do these seem like reasonable estimates? Or should I continue to shop around, there are only a few in the area that work on Nissans. Also, are all of these components necessary? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

 

I'm not sure that it's THAT expensive..try pulling some ECU error codes...is check engine flashing?

50 dollars for a slightly used knock sensor for nissan maxima. As opposed to 130 which it costs else where. Starter you can get from autozone pretty cheaply... Don't know about the coolant sensor...

 

1) Change the coolant sensor, the knock sensor code will go away.

2) You might only need a solinoid for your starter, check with local automotive supply chains, Nissan probably wount sell only that part, they rather rape you for the whole starter.

3)Part by the ignition switch

Something tells me you can get your car back in shape for around $100 bucks. The coolant temp sensor is only like 40 bucks and the solinoid is pretty cheap too. All are DIY items.

 

Indeed, the Knock sensor is most likely being set off by the coolant sensor, so change that first. The fact that your KS is being set off is the reason why you felt reduced HP.

 

Usually the Knock sensor code is a "ghost code" triggered by some other anomaly.. I got the code and bought a replacement knock sensor- turns out I didn't need it and it remains in the original box, unopened, though- it's for sale for $100 shipped. Check your curren one first though, to make sure you don't need a new one, along with the harness for your knock sensor.
