Two nights in a row on my way home from work, I raced an Eclipse. The first night, I raced the new eclipse. I don't know if it had any mods but it was a 5-speed. I got a completely stock automatic with about 40-50 lbs of audio in the trunk. We raced up to about 90 mph when he gave up cuz I had him but and 1 1/2 car lengths. The next night, the older eclipse, maybe a 97 or something pulled up next to me. Another 5-speed. He had one of this big annoying mufflers, and probably an air intake. He was revving his engine and playing with the stick. When the light turned green with both took off. I had him by 1/2 car length until about 40mph, then he started gaining on me. he passed me at like 70 and had me by about 1 car length at 100 when i gave up. I couldn't figure how a lost to a piece of trash eclipse. The next day, before going to school, I had to clean out my car. I realized that I had two of my 17" MOMO rims and tires in my back seat.

turbo

it was probably a GS-T or GS-X. my friend has one considerably modded and right on take off, acceleration isnt that great but once the turbo kicks in, the pull real hard. my friend took out the stock turbo and put a bigger greddy turbo in(i think). im not sure how the stock turbo is but i kno on a rolling start, it can take a mustang gt. correct me if im wrong.

The older Eclipse Turbos are <MUCH faster than the new V6. PLUS they have a huge aftermarket following. When the boost kicks in watch out! First time I drove my freinds Eclipse home from a bar (b/c he was drunk) and when I downshifted to 2nd around 30 mph to change lanes I about ran into the guy in front of me b/c the boost came on and launched us.

What!?! Yeah I got around to cleaning my car yesterday also. That elephant that I misplaced was in the glovebox. Hehe. Dude how did you forget that you have two big assed wheels in your car?

don't forget AWD

Like you said, their not amazing on takeoff, but four wheels pulling instead of just two make a hell of a difference. That alone probably kept him with you enough until the turbo really started to kick in.

So how much weight are you talking?

And how much does weight take into effect? If your going to that extreme, how much did the other driver weigh vs your weight?

My brother has a '95 Eclipse GS-T auto (sucker), and kept talking trash about how much faster his car was then mine. I finally lined up next to him and we were off. I won, but we kept it under seventy. I know that the 4G63 turbo engines have HORRIBLE turbo lag, and if I got him off the line, then I would be in the clean. This only works with auto, stock Eclipses though. Almost everybody that has one of the nicer Eclipses (GS-Ts, GSXs) mods the hell out of them, and can get mucho power out of them. My uncle has a '93 Talon AWD that runs in the high 12s in the 1/4 mile, and it looks completely stock(well except for the huge intercooler if you look in the front). Good luck.

Rumor has it...

Can't remember where I read this, but their's supposed to be a guy out in Cali that has a modded Eclipse that runs circles around Porches and Skylines. Any of you guys heard this one? They can get really fast, and the AWD is a killer advantage over any other car.
