Sticking high idle

Weird problem I've had off and on. Sometimes when I pull up to a light, the idle is stuck very high ~1000. If I put it in neutral (auto trans), it jumps to 1500. I can get it to drop down sometimes by revving a couple times. Other times it just stays high. Anyone know why the idle would stick like that?

I had a similar problem with my '95 5 speed. If I would let up on the throttle gradually and push in the clutch, it would idle somewhere between 1100 and 1400. If I would blip the throttle, it would then idle down to a normal speed (varies depending on whether the a/c is on or not). This went on for about 5 or 6 months and I just thought I needed to clean my throttle body again. But, eventually it threw a code for the TPS (throttle position sensor). I checked it with a multi-meter and I could get it to replicate with an incorrect voltage output if I let the throttle slowly down to the closed position. If I let up on it quickly, I would get a correct voltage output reading. If your TSP is bad, follow the shop manual instructions exactly. I didn't, and it took me forever. I couldn't get the car to idle below 1600 for an hour before I went through it step by step. Good luck!
