question on intake

ive heard and read lots of different opinions and im weighing on getting an intake. i dont race my car, i drive it to go to somewhere where i need to go. i like to get there pretty quickly, but im not crazy with it. i dont run at 4k rpm all the time or anything, im a normal driver and will accelerate/cruise just like anyone else. ive heard intakes decrease low-end-rpm torque, which would basically be the reverse of what i wnat... i want the zip back in the low rpms like it used to have. i have a 96 GLE with 161k miles. wondering if an intake is a smart choice for the money (which im quite short on) and for what i want, thanks

Many people who want to keep the low end, especially when they have automatics, go for a Cold Air Intake. That would probably be the one most suited to you. Many people also like the noise that an intake makes. Sounding similar to a mustang growl. You can take a look at them all here:

If you're missing low end zip, check to see if your knock sensor is dead.
