low fuel light

I was just wondering how long it takes before the low fuel light comes on. The needle on my 99 SE was just about on the E line and it still wasn't on is this normal? thanks!

yea its normal.. Mine does that too...came on directly on E, and it's a weird light too... it turns on and off (and dims too) with the direction you are going.

haha I can agree with that one dude. I usually never let my gas get low enough to get the light, but I was driving a bunch of chicks home (30 miles away) and I was low on fuel anyways, and just didn't think how far it was to get there, so halfway home in the middle of nowhere it came on.. had about 20 miles to go till the nearest gas station and I made it fine.. I just kept my foot off the floor haha! So you should be good to go atleast 20 miles after the light comes on

I believe those lights are called IDIOT lights.

Why would you want them to come on?

Mine comes on when about 1.5 gallons are left in the tank. I usually fillup when the tank is down to 1/4.

To test it, just take some gas with you in one of those gas containers. If you run out then you know the light doesn't work and you won't be stuck since you have gas in the car. If the light comes on, then you know it works and put the extra gas in =P

Been there, done ALL of that, and went inside and checked the dash light to see if it works and it does. Could it be something inside the gas tank itself?

it could be a sensor in the tank maybe... which would be $$$$$$$$ to fix, and probably a ***** too

Low fuel light revisited...

I got a 99SE-L, and the light typically comes on when there's 2.5-3 gallons left...after being fooled numerous times into thinking I'm nearly dry. This is based on the 18.5 gallon tank.
