looking at buying a 4th gen

Hello all,

I hope this is the welcoming message into my ownership of a maxima...

In my area (Central NY) i have the opportunity to purchase a 99 Maxima SE Loaded (with everything except leather and heated seats) The silverish exterior with the grey/black interior..
Vechile has 54000 Miles, Perfect condition no exterior or interiior flaws.

Seller was asking $11000, i talked him down to $10000

In anyones opinion is this a good buy? I have been reading a lot of messages on this board and i am still unsure. I have seen a few maximas (4th gens) in the 8k or 9k range, but their modded. This one is a bone stock, nothing done to it.

Oops forgot some things, its a 5spd
Id just like to hear some opinions, I appreciate all feedback and comments. Thanks in advance!

P.S. I just sold my 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX (AWD Turbo) and am now looking for a car, the maximas have caught my attention and i love the looks of them!

Well, This to me, seems to be a good buy, You are certainly getting a nice max! I prefer the leather, but diff strokes for diff. folks! I love that silver color, its very nice on a maxima..You are going to a VERY different kind of car, I must warn you...Compared to that eclipse, the maxima is a BOAT! Stock to Stock, the maxima will not handle nearly as well, and although the hp is similar, the eclipse is smaller, and the awd gives quite an advantage...
The Maxima will be a much torquier and stronger running car, and much more reliable! The maxima's engine was rated best v-6 several years in a row!
I assume that since you owned an eclipse, you are into modding...If this is the case, There is a decent aftermarket for maximas, and we even have a maxima in the high 11's! I hope that you purchase the max, you won't regret it, I certainly didn't...
WELCOME TO THE ORG, anything you need, just ask!
(ohhhh umm, make sure that what you ask isn't in the FAQ's, you will get flamed )
damn i just blathered! oh well, no sense re-typing it now!

Thanks for the welcome, I know not much compares stock to stock witht he eclipse platform, when i sold it (a little over a month ago) i was running low 12's on stock internals. Now i know this car would take a lot more to get their, but Im into a little luxery. Granted i would love to have the leather, i really wnt that option, but I dont have much of a choice. I have seen a few maximas for sale around here and they are all either huge $$$ or automatic (sorry not to flame you auto guys). Im into reading and im into tuning. Im a certified mechanic and MECP certified (thats car stereo / alarms , etc.. for anyone who doesnt know.)

I just wanted to know a little bit more about the year, I have seen people say that 96's are one of the best years, but IDK, maybe since the 99 is the last of that production body style things could only get better from their first production year? Just my blabble.......

WTF? Who broke the 11 second mark? Best I was aware of was Mardi's 11.912.

if you invest wisely $1600, your max will run 13's. obviously that is without a SC or MEVI. not bad IMO for a four door family sedan/grocery grabber...

the reason i really like maximas that are modded is i don't see that many done up. i see plenty of hondas and tegs but no maximas.

also i think 97-98 was the best 2 years to buy.

good luck hope you buy a max. welcome to the org!

Maxima is a great purchase...I think 10K is a very fair price too. With the low miles you won't have any problems for a long time. Remember your insurance will probably drop a crapload (more mod money!). Its really nice to be able to haul 4 people around comfortably and still humiliate hondas!! As far as the leather seats, they weigh a ton more than cloth, and become very hot in summer...at times I wish I only had cloth. Max's are rare in the racing scene, and that makes you cooler to not have an actual sport compact. 99 is a great year and the 97-99 IMHO look better than 95-96. I say go for it!!!

I think you're getting a pretty darn good deal.

Like what everyone said, I believe the 97-98's look the best (brake light over signal/reverse) and better looking front grill. The 95/96's aren't no slouch either. Their 5spd is the fastest (0-60MP/H) of the 4th gens but they don't look "as" good.

Only small quibble I have is the squishy suspension on the SE. I find they ride like crap at times but are generally acceptable. A little harsh, but I suppose that's why it's an SE.

Good thing you live in the states. Modifications for the Max are plenty down there.

that is a great deal. i picked up a silver 99 SE 5-speed with 33,000 miles last feb for $14,995.
I must warn you...Compared to that eclipse, the maxima is a BOAT!
I hope youre only talking about physical dimensions, because the eclipse weighs over 1000 lbs more than the maxima

Hmmm, i'm getting 3014 for the Eclipse and... 3072 for the maxima. That's a little surprising, but anyway, I'm sure he meant boat-like in terms of handling, with all the bodylean and such.

welcome to the org. you will love your max. esp if its a 5 spd liek you say. 54k miles in nothings, ahha.its barely broken in. 10k sounds good for a 99. i dont know what your other options are, with 10k your have quite a few,but i know you wont regret it if you buy a maxima..

car actually had 51995 on the odometer, i picked it up for 10 even. If had the car for a few days now and im in love! Ive never owned a v6 before, but i love it! Im getting ready to either order my SC or a Turbo kit here soon. Also though about doing a custom turbo setup, since i have a lot of experience in the turbo field (from the eclipse and other cars) So we will have to see what i end up doing.

Thanks again for the welcome!
