Hard starting with the new engine...

Ever since the install, this engine has been really hard to start from time to time. Most notably after driving for a while, or first thing in the morning.

Fuel pressure seems to be just fine. Compression is fine. I grabbed a voltmeter today at work and checked the battery, and got 12.5V, which _should_ be enough, correct?

Basically, the engine turns, then there's a clunking sound (almost like the starter skips or something), and occasionally a bit of a backfire. I've found that opening the throttle a little helps the car start.

The car never had problems starting before the new engine, so I doubt its something with the starter.

Ideas?

On the engine, yes, but I doubt its the problem. Compression is just fine. Its gotta be either electrical, fuel or ignition. Car runs just fine once it get started...so I doubt its fuel or ignition.

Try cleaning the idle air control unit and maybe the coolant temp sensor. I think the temp sensor tells the car whether it's cold/hot so it knows what mode to start the car in. It might be "confused". Also check all vacuum lines and all grounds. Those are really easy to miss when doing an engine swap. (AMKIK!). If the engine runs fine, it's usually something small and simple.

Fixed a pretty big vacuum leak last night. Vacuum is now happy, but it didn't help starting.

I have noticed that this engine gets up to temperature (water temp) a TON faster than my old engine. I figured maybe the thermostat in the old engine wasn't closing all the way or something...but I guess it could be the ECTS.

Thanks.

Could be a small vacuum hose also. Just keep checking things. It could be your CAS too but since your car runs okay, I'm about that one. Maybe clean it?? Yes, when I replaced my motor with a low miler, the damned thing warmed up in within a mile or so! I think it's a sign of a tight, good running engine(barring any thermostate problems). I put a new thermostat in my old clunker engine and it still took forever.

Well, vacuum is dead on what it should be, 18-20inhg. So I don't think its the problem.

I would think a CAS sensor problem would cause problems once its running.

One of the guys in the shop here brought in a battery load tester (SnapOn, its cool), so I'm going to test that this afternoon.
