knocking like crazy

Help. I just arrived home from a trip to the Oregon Coast from Vancouver BC and my 98 SE has a terrible knock. It started after about 150km. I filled my tank in the States to start the trip. I noticed the knocking going under even light loads, and it got progressively worse. I was only putting in Chevron 92 Octane. By the time we got to our destination, the knocking under load was terrible, with blue and black smoke coming out of the exhaust. When I started up the car again after sitting for a few minutes, there was a lot of blue/black smoke from the exhaust, with a slight burning rubber smell? I stopped in the local Nissan dealership at Newport, and they said the quality of the gas is crappy, and to add some octane booster, which I did..Penzoil octane booster. It seemed to help a bit, but not a whole lot. At the border crossing on the way home and idling for approx 30 minutes, the car took off like crap, knocking like crazy, and barely had power because I was afraid to give it gas. There was a good sized cloud behind me, both black and blue. Any ideas what could be the problem. The car was fully tuned in May (cost $535), and I have had no problems whatsoever. By the way, the car consumed about 3 litres of oil over 1700 km (1050 miles). Is it the rings, valve seals, knock sensor? and what about the slight burning rubber smell from the exhaust. Absolutely love my Max, but was disappointed Please...Any help will do.

i'd check coils, plugs and knock sensor...those are more simple to check

have you gotten any ecu codes? if not still check it for hidden codes (ks)

i'd also do a compression test for each cylinder...

Nissan told you it was gas?

Just from reading your post one can conclude you have internal engine damage. The knocking can be a spun bearing, thrown wrist pin or broken piston rings which may be the cause of your excessive smoke.

I'd start looking around for a used engine if I were you.

Agree on the compression check. The blue smoke is indicative of burning oil. Anything that lets oil get burned is gonna show up on a compression check ('sept valve stem seals, and they won't make any noise if they go bad)
