Problem with Harlan !!

Went out tonight for a few spirted runs with the VI and I noticed on my way back home that the Harlan light was blinking when I checked it..meaning it flaked out..I didnt notice it any weaker than it always was since I raced a GT 5spd and did very well against it...It was probably on one of my last runs after I raced him...I also noticed it blinking when I raced a kid and the car didnt feel right...

Now my question is why is it flaking out ? Could it actually be a bad Harlan ? (probably not) Could it be a bad connnection somewhere ?? should I do all the connections over again, this time with a proper wire shripper and not just a wire cutter ??

BTW: Not using a relay

that is your problem. But adding a relay now will not fix your problem. There is probably already damage to the micro circuit.

some guys that are using the harlen switches without relays may have soloenoids with less of a draw, or they may just be lucky so far. I have been using a relay since day one with zero problems. Some blamed a relay for their problems which is impossible. If relays were that unreliable your car would be breaking down every day cause it is full of them. I really wish I knew what to say to make people believe me about this Harlen issue. Look guys I have been a professional automotive electrical tech for 10 years!

You can buy a Relay at Radio Shack. Just look for a simple 5 amp automotive relay. The salesman should point you straight to it.

Wire it up so that both positives are always connected, and so that the relay is activated by the ground signal coming from the harlan.

When the Harlan engages, the ground signal from it sets a ground for the relay, allowing it to switch and the + signal to go to the solenoid.

Most likely you did not fry it. I had mine do the blinking thing once because of a miswire by a friend who wanted to "clean up my install"

But I fixed the snafu, and it was all working fine then.

I spoke with Harlan in depth about this - just use the relay.

Relay Primer

Here's a search of various relay topics (mostly Harlans and nitrous)
http://forums.maxima.org/search.php?...der=descending

There's several threads about wiring relays, so check them out and post back if you still have questions.

I'm glad you said that. It made no sense to me either when people started blaming the relay. I've been running the Harlan to a relay with no problems, except two times (unrelated to the relay) after going through a high pressure car wash when water was able to get to the rpm switch in the engine bay. Both times it acted flaky for a while but eventually went back to normal after it dried out. Gotta move the Harlan inside the cabin.

Wheres is your RPM switch located? in the car or under the hood? Go to radio shack they have them in the yellow drawer, I use a 30AMP, thats exactly what it will say.

I have 2 Harlans inside the car and 1 under the hood The heat can't be great for the Harlan, but I don't think that's really the issue either.

I am going to have to say heat plays a big role in this chip for the simple fact that I dont have my wired up under my hood, I do have the wires running to and from the battery and RPM signal and thats about it. The RPM switch is in my glove compartment. This particular issue I cant say, one thing I can say is that since it is some sord of computer chip of some type heat is not good for it, neither is condensation because it will damage it. Look at our ECUs they are inside the car not under the hood. Something to think about. Yes is a little more work to wire it from the inside but its worth it. At least to me it is.

ok all of you harlan freaks. Mine shows that the presets are still stored. But slowly my MEVI has been spittering out. at first it wouldn't always open up at then sometimes it would open. now it never does. I hooked up a light to the switch to the switch and it never turns on, so I'm pretty certain that the the switch is shot.. and I used a relay.

I bought a summit racing, and it they sent me the wrong one, then they sent me another and then I had to send it back because it was not direct ignition compatable. I also have an MSD, but its not Direct ignition compatable either.

right that is why everyone goes the harlan route. I wired mine to rpm signal on the ecu (and kept the switch in the console).. an then just adjusted rpm by 1/2. I set it to 2600rpm = 5200rpm actual for mevi, etc..

someone else had different results I forget 1/4 or 66% or something but they got it working too... its a little bit of trial and error as far as actual rpm settings until you figure out what to multiply/divide by.. but thats what the little green light is for, testing

i think the msd has to be sent to msd for "modifying"... which consists of cutting one wire? I dont know the details on that as I have not tried it, but you may be able to get help from others & MSD

Well, now I'm not sure if its the Relay or the Harlan, I was under the hood and the vacuum switch was just clicking back and forth.

I'm hoping on getting my VI any day now, but I need to get a Harlan RPM switch. Where is the best/cheapest place to get them?

Who are you buying your VI from?

Anyway - you can only get them at one place:

http://harlan-engineering.com/store/rpm/rpm.html

You could also use a MSD Switch, but they cost alot more (more than double) and aren't as tunable.
