In for an oil change...Out with service enging light

Went in to get an oil change. My max has about 61,000 mile on it and I treat it as if its my son. (tune ups, cleaning etc) When I left It felt sluggish but I figured it was due to the change. The next day I see a light on my dash a light I didnt even know was there... SERVICE ENGINE SOON!!! . Now I mechanically challenge but reading the post gives me the gist of a few things. So I check my dipstick and see that the oil is about 2inchs above the 2nd cringe of the stick could this be it???to MUCH oil. Hes closed today but I want to be armed with suggestions when I see him tommorow. Thanks in advance:

Check the code from the ECU. Post then what code you got. Directions to do this are on the top of them 4th Gen forum.

Make sure you were checking the oil correctly. Checking the oil in a warm/hot engine will not give you accurate levels. Check it in the morning before you start the car, that is best.

And do what 95CustomMaxima said, pull the code and check what's wrong first. It might be completely unrelated and just plain coincidence ... you will have no reason to blame the check engine light on the shop if the failure code is unrelated.

I ran the codes again and again and now Im geting a steady 3,4 (Knock sensor). So off I went to the Mafia I mean Dealer. 164 bucks!!!. Oh sorry $178.23 NY tax. I asked the guys at the service desk "how much would they charge" he quoted me $314 bucks. Just to pop this baby out and pop a new one in. Going to Sears tommorow to get what I need and doing this one myself. Gotta start somewhere. Thanks for all the help.

You can get KS's cheaper online. About $130 from online Nissan dealers giving 25% discount or about $100 on eBay. If you haven't opened it, see if they'll take it back (just say you didn't need it) and buy it online.

Do it yourself, here are the directions: http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/507 and http://www.skippynet.com/maxima/knocksensor.htm

Ok got the sensor and went at it. It was a B**c* to get off but after about 2hrs and a six pack it came loose. Had to wait another hr to let the engine cool and the rest was a snap .Got a little worried because after the swap I still pulled a 3,4 but after a day or two of driving I got the ever so beautiful 5,5 (all clear). Thanks to all who responded and helped me through this. Im new to the do it yourself thing but thanks to all I got a confidence boost and saved some cash
