This is really wierd, and wondered if it has happened to anyone else, I have noticed recently that on occasions a light puff of smoke comes out of my steering column when you start the car. I haven't pulled it apart yet cos I've been pretty busy, but something must be arcing.(Happened 3 times in da last 2 mths) Any info on this would be great.

Your airbag is about to BLAST you!!

Just kidding, I hope for your sake anyway. The same thing was happening in my friends mustang when he installed a Grant steering wheel. It smoked because the wiring came loose and came in contact with something metal when he turned the wheel. A spark would ignite in there and small puffs of smoke would rise out. I wouldn't suggest going in, unless you know what your doing. Try to get Daniel B. Martins attention on this if you need good advice.

I've never had this experience. Frankly, it frightens me. Where there's smoke, there's fire. Something inside your steering column is roasting. Check with the dealer. Ask if there is a Technical Service Bulletin on this problem. Make the dealer service advisor understand this is a potentially serious safety defect. That should motivate him to take your complaint seriously.

it could be some wires touching together and causing a small spark with some smoke.

First, check you air filter, that is most likely where its coming from. Change your oil that could also be the problem. Its not the steering column thats smoking, its some malfunction in the engine and the smoke creeps its way inside the car. My advice is to examine the car with the hood up and let it run for a while, you will more than likely find where the smokes from.

Also, check to see if you drop the weed on the floor while you were driving. That happends to me a lot.
Them 5-0s be phuken with me!!

LOL !!!!

It may well have been grass, those buds get in everywhere !
Could be shorting on some wiring, and sending me lil ghostsies whilst driving.

As someone who has taken apart his entire dash to replace the heator core, it's not that hard just to remove the covers that house the steering column. It's about 4-6 phillips screws. You will probably have to fiddle w/ the covers in order for them to clear the upper speedo dash portion but it should come out.
