Knocking noise coming from timing chain area with A/C on

Guys my 95 GXE started making a somewhat strange noise today. At idle you can hear a noise that is almost like a rattling coming from the metal casing that os on the left side of the block if you are facing the engine bay. Im thinking it may be a timing chain. Any ideas? The car has ~170K miles. What could the problem be? How much would it cost to be fixed? How soon does it need to be fixed?

Thanks
Todd

Reading other threads I did come across a few possiblities. My car is lowered and the bottom plastic is somewhat messed up so it would not be out of the question for the compressor to get wet. I did not hit any HUGE puddles though.

Any thoughts

Re: Knocking noise coming from timing chain area with A/C on

My friend I am having the same frigging problem. I have 53,000 miles on the car . I drive without the AC when possible. I am hoping someone reply with and answer. I thought I was the only one with this problem. I do not know if it it the timing chain or the tensioner?

ITs gonna be the Compressor bearing on the A/C compressor. At least thats what Nissan will tell you. A friend of mine had this happen on his 97 before he got a 350. Nissan changed the compressor out, and it still did it. They changed the damn thing out like 4 times but still swore up and down that that was the problem.

Thanks for all your replys . I will have the following checked out:
the bearing on the compressor , any blower motor cover that needs replacing ect. I was worried sick that it was the timing chain.
Thank to all that have replied.

Also check that all the bolts holding the compressor to the mount and the mount to the engine are good and tight. I was on the verge of replaceing the A/C compressor in my wife's car for exactly the same noise (only when A/C on) until I saw the bolts were loose. Bit of loctite and snugged them down fixed it for free.

I just started having the same problem recently at 125,000 miles The noise occurs at idle or under low acceleration with the AC blower on. Kevlo911, From that link you posted, it looks like it might be the cover. I might try what Scruit says Does anyone have a link to what the compressor looks like? That noise is embarrassing especially, when everybody's eyes are attracted to the aesthetic additions to the car.

In my wife's car the noise was only at idle, and worse just off-idle, but went away when you revved it up.

Here's something else for you guys to check.... I don't know how it was making the noise with just the A/C on but when I went to Nissan I was told that my alternator was loose and to tighten it up. Went home to find the nut that holds the alternator was missing. it was a PITA to fix but the car works much better now. By the way the pulley isn't hard to replace either. I had it off working on the alternator.
