I would check the ECU for the dreaded 0304 code. I have a '95 so I'm not sure if you can check it like I can. I'm sure someone will help you there.
The knock sensor tells the ECU if the engine is pinging or knocking (pre-ignition) and will adjust the timing and other things to minimize it. This usually only happens under heavy load like climbing hills or when trompin' on it. If the sensor fails the ECU will think the engine is pinging all the time and your power and mileage will suffer quite a bit.
I had a bad knock sensor and after replacing it I got about 2mpg back and and the car feels just feels quicker. Seems to rev more freely. I still get around 390 miles per tank with my GLE after 132,000 miles.
Replacing the sensor is not rocket science but it is a royal pain in the *ss. Its under the intake, between the cylinder banks. Quite a tight space to try to stuff your hand in. Thank God there is only one bolt holding it.
