okay, any advice for 5-spd swap newbie

alright, the time has come. my auto is going to bite the dust once again. am i going to install or rebuild an auto? NO! now, i'd like some pointers for those who've gone this route. mods and others, i have read the write-up on this swap and searched. i'm just wanted the little things that weren't mentioned. if any of you have done this and have advice you think should be address for this swap that hasn't been said before, let me know! now, as far as ecu... will only a 98 work? i've read where a few of them are interchangable. however, i don't wanna be stuck with an ecu that won't function (i know 99s won't work). anyways, any pointers would be great. i'm about to start shopping junkyards online as soon as i finish this post. i've hated my auto since i drove a 5-spd and now i'm going to take the big step instead of dump money into an auto..

one other thing.. is it worth the extra cash to get a factory lsd manual tranny?

You don't need a new harness. You don't need a new ecu either (unless u get tired of the CEL light).

Make sure you have good drill tools to put in the clutch pedal, that can be a real ***** if you dont. Oh and make sure you have lots of patience.

I was under the impression you needed one or the other, ecu or harness to not have cel, if thats the case the harness is alot cheaper than ecu, but i could be wrong anyone know?

You defintely don't need a new harness. A new ecu would be a good idea. JDM4LIFE you might not get the cel light, but I'll bet that your idle is much higher than it should be, especially when stopping. Not really a problem, more of a nuisance.

so i can run a 5-spd ecu with auto harness? if i'm going to buy an ecu, i'm pretty much stuck with only a 98 ecu, right? i remember reading that a 95-96 ecu will definitely throw a cel in a 98 (there goes the future possibility of jwt ecu...)

Yes you only need the driver's side axle if u get a non locking differential.

great, so it just gets more expensive for an lsd...

also, instead of buying the actual brake pedal, could i buy some anniversary edition pedals and would be fine as well?

LSD Tranny is the same price as a Non-LSD Tranny.. you just need to spend more to get the driver side axle as sexima said..

Just be sure you know what you are getting into. It wasnt the most fun. I mean the install is probably the easiest part. Getting the parts and stuff like that is much harder.

i'm finding that out as we speak... half the salvage yards i've called either don't have the part or aren't willing to cooperate on the i-need-more-than-a-transmission situation. i called a place a year ago when i was interested in getting a 5-spd and they quoted me around 1.1k for everything i'd possibly need. however, i can't remember the place. even if i did, i'm sure they've probably sold everything too.. any advice on who to call next?

honestly, if i were to do it agian, i'd go find a whole parts car and use that. You will make a profit if you sell the rest of the car as well... only problem is finding a place to keep it

Yeah i went the aftermarket route as well. Fidanza/centerforce/B&M but then i hated the centerforce so i changed out the disc for ACT because it only was 89 bucks shipped. But now i regret not getting a differential like the quaife. I guess next time i have the tranny out i will throw one of those in. But i am afraid with the current turbo project i will be lsipping and sliding around for a while!
