Drop Resistor Mod for Auto Tranny, Expriences?
If you have done this mod please skip to the next paragraph.
Just a quick refresher on what this is, for those who do not know - Auto Maxima's take a while between shifts to make the shifts softer and more comfortable. This is good for everyday driving but really eats up time during a race. Behind your intake there is a thin metal box called the drop resistor, if you unhook this it goes into default mode and applies full line pressure to your shifts which make them very quick. Full on shifts all the time would be very uncomfortable and probably really hard on your transmission, so a switch can be added, one setting is for everyday driving, the other is for racing. You do this by splicing into the ground wire and hooking this up to a switch. When the switch is closed the ground is fine and the car shifts normally, when it is open the resistor is not grounded so it goes into default mode and you have very fast shifts.
Thanks to mzmtg for the write up - http://bgarner.tripod.com/1995nissanmaxima/id3.html
My question for those who have done this is have you had any transmission problems? If you have been to the track does it really take close to a half second off your time? Is reseting the ECU becoming tedious (I will probably use this a couple of times on the weekend)? Do any of you regret doing this mod? I plan on doing this mod next week and figure that the gauge of the wire and switch are not really a concern since it is hooked up to the ground.
Thanks in advance

i have the drop resistor, hooked 2 a switch...the wheels sometime chirp from 1-2 gear, i dont know about a half-second, i can swear that my takeoff is hurting because of this mod, havent timed it though, any1 out there with track and time evidence??

I've done this mod. I have no track evidence, but it does help. 1/2 second is outragous, but I be willing to bet its good for .1 - .3. Also, if ur goin real hard with OD off it will chirp into third. I started this 3K miles ago. For a while I just disconnected the resistor. Then about 500 miles ago I added the switch. No harm observed so far. There is no need to reset the ECU manually. When u flip the switch it takes one shift to go from luxury to harsh/harsh to luxury.

Is that really worth .1 seconds?

To each his own but if you haven't tried it over the long haul don't make assumptions.

I've made close to 50 1/4 mile runs using this and I have no problems. I'm in the same boat as Jime, if I don't flip the switch the shifts are really slow. I'm N/A so I can just imagine how long it would slip if I was putting down the power he is.

So you do not have to clear the CEL once the switch is put back, it clears itself?
