I would buy
I would buy the 5 Speed!!! thats a no brainer, a newer car with high miles is ok, VQ's are like 300$ and I heard an engine swap isnt that bad JUST INCASE you get into any trouble. Ask anyone of the auto's on the org if they wish they had gotten a stick and 100% of them will say YES! Not to mention with a 1997 you are open to a lot more things...better looking front and rear end...red/clears. It's your money man, but if it was my cash...97 5 Spd.
meilage shouldnt be a problem. vq engines are great with reliability. plus i would advise you to get a manual, STRONGLY ADVISE!! plus 97'-99' looks so much better. and maybe you can strike a deal. just say... "get that oil leak taken care of, and ill buy the car right now"
The 97+ models go through the crash testing better than the 95-96 models.
Nissan leather can be a bit flaky so the cloth may be a better choice.
5-speed is more fun to drive, faster, and more fuel efficient.
If it doesn't take much difficulty to fix the oil leak, go with the 97.

Some corrections...
5 Speeds arent more fuel effecient...infact they are less fuel effecient. And the oil leak is something very common with 5 speed trannys over 100K, its probably just a gasket or something very simple but for 5K its still a steal.
if you like shifting go for the 5 sp...If you like to enjoy your coffee while driving go for the auto. I would say that both cars are great...
or,you can get an extra $ 4500 and buy my 99 GXE with 47 k. No leaks,no troubles & 5 speed.

A. although it has a little more miles than B, 97 has a better safety rating than that of the 95. I believe it looks a little nicer as well, having a total flat back(trunk) and is a newer car. As long as you keep up with your oil changes and just maintain it, there should be no problem going over 200,000+ miles.

Actually - the "kid" is right (partially - at least) the Auto's get a better EPA Highway mileage rating because of the taller final drive.

My own experience is before I converted to 5 speed I got 24 mpg combined city/highway, and now I get 27.
