Acceleration

What's up Max peeps!
I'm hoping you guys can help me out. I have a 96 Maxima automatic (DynoMax muffler, Air filter mods) and I find that sometimes when I accelerate there's a pause and then it kicks in. Or sometimes there's no kick, it jus gradually accelerates slowly. Example I was trying to accelerate to change lanes and there was no pick up. But when I got in the lane it took right off. I've been having this problem before my modifications.
How can I get a more consistant acceleration? and has anybody else had this problem?
Another question is how can I tell that my engine is shifting gears correctly? ( at the right time)

I appreciate any help

exactly

its your transmission, wondering if it should downshift or not
if it downshifts, you'll get a pause followed by hard acceleration
if it doesn't downshift, then you get basically no power

basically the only way to solve this is to do a 5spd conversion

Sounds like it could be the knock sensor. A bad KS will not set off the CEL, you have to read the code out of the ECU. If you accelerate well above 3000 RPM but not below, that would be another good indication of bad KS. There are several threads currently discussing knock sensors. Check out http://www.skippynet.com/maxima/knocksensor.htm or http://www.motorvate.ca/auto/maxima/...ock_sensor.htm for more info.

i just got my max today so forgive me if i sound too stupid after saying this.

knowning that it has 190 hp and 205 torque, are you even suppose to feel a sudden fast acceleration instead of slowly gaining speed, unless u floor it hard?

having bought my max about 6 hours ago, i tried to push it hard and feel the true power of the car. m9 has 24k miles and its an auto 98 se. i pressed gas a bit but there was no fast acceleration, car slowly gained more speed. then i floored it and rpm jumped to 5 and car suddenly flew, is this what i am suppose to expect from the engine ?

Is there a certain time you should change the knock sensor? My 96Max is at 122km right now.

One more time, check your ECU for the 0304 code. No, your CEL will not come on if his is the only code you have. So you have to check.

I have the EXACT same things going in with my 5spd. It is not the KS. It is not the MAF. My guess is that it is the TPS. I noticed that if I grabbed the throttle lever and worked it back and forth from closed to open (WITH THE ENGINE AND IGNITION OFF) about 10 times, I got my old max back. It would last for about a few hours to a few days. This leads me to believe that the POT in the TPS is worn or dirty. I'm going to check it with an analog multimeter and replace it if I see that the needle does not move smoothly or consitantly... it will be $52 from my local dealer. I'll probably post again if I replace it.

After testing the TPS (volts, ohms) I found that it looked to be very healthy. resistance figures looked correct according the the data in the Haynes manual and the needle moved very smoothly. I decided to wire it up so I could have the meter in the car and view it while I was driving. Still looked fine... Damn.

So, I figured I'll check the ECU ONE MORE TIME. And guess what! I got a bliiiink, bliiiink, bliiink... blink, blink, blink, blink. 0304 (knock Sensor). I immediately drove to Radio Shack, bought a pack of 470K Ohm resistors, filled my tank up with 92 octane (as ALWAYS) and bought a bottle of octane booster.

Plugged the resistor into the harness and emptied the bottle into the tank.

Definately helps. It's not 100% consistant but it is MUCH better now. Yes, these are my precise figures from the 'butt dyno'.

The next day, I drove to the dealership and bought a KS (that little sucker is SPENDY!). I'll install it this weekend (using the famed bloody knuckle method).

i am having this same problem...I have a 98 manual. I have cleaned the TB, and I am not getting a KS code. Can it help you at all to replace the KS even if you are not throwing the code? Also, in general does anyone have any ideas on what else this could be. I am having the same problem that most people are describing....pushing the gas hard and having lagging acceleration (bogging down feeling), or pushing the gas down and having the bogging feeling then it will take off like it was sprayed. Thanks for any help.

Did you check your throttle cable? It could be loose. Mine had quite a bit of play but I didn't really notice the lack of throttle response. But we tightened it up anyway.

Maybe it is that little sensor located right after the iacv??when i took apart the iacv 2 clean, inside just to the right that little port was clogged with little rocks (carbon maybe) and things, it goes down a tube to a sensor. maybe the whole port is clogged, i also took out that sensor and it was black but no cel...
