Please Help, max has lost power...

I have a 96 SE 5spd, and around a week ago, I have noticed a lack of power on my max. It still could put up a fight, but the loss is noticable. I have within the past 3-4 months put in a new fuel filter, a few weeks ago cleaned the JWT popcharger cone, recently put in fuel injector cleaner, RESTORE oil treatment, plugs around 15k ago, cleaned maf sensor, but it has within the last week had less power. It does have 144,600k miles, but a VQ lasts forever. Also, I usually get 390-425 on a tank of gas, but I put on 150, and the gauge is approaching the 1/2 mark. So, I have lost some power and some mileage. I have read numerous other threads, but none seem to help. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! THANKS!

Bryan

knock sensor is my immediate guess... since i recently changed mine...

get an ohmeter... your going to need to measure the knock sensors reading...

Search here on the org... you will find out how to test it. It's REALLY not hard! Just have to pull the knock sensor out and put the test wires on each prong. If it measures under like... 500 ohms, replace it. Heck mine measured 0 ohms... and it was cracked! I had no power AT ALL!! I would let the clutch out and start on the gas and the car simply would not pull like it did before

good luck

Loss of gas mileage, lack of low rpms acceleration, "bumpy" acceleration from 2500-4000rpms, could possibly be slow reacting 02 sensors. How old are your 02 sensors?

they are the original sensors. the acceleration is not bumpy tho. Since starting this thread, I have taken the max for a drive, and it seems to have some good power again. I just hope it stays that way. Some kind of ghost problem

I'm telling you right now, it's definitely your ks. I had the same exact problem. Sometimes it would run strong and sometimes it would feel like crap. There's was no hesitation, it was just plain old f**ked up. Replace it asap trust me.

You do not have to pull the knock sensor out to test it. You can follow the knock sensor harness back to the nearest connector and check it there. The connector is not the one closet to the KS (green colored connector on my 96), but a few inches more towards the front of the car. It is a grey connector with a heat shielded wire running into it and two wires coming out the other side (one black and one clear). Only one of these wires attaches to the KS, so check them both (pin to ground should be ~550,000 ohms [not 550 ohms])
