gear oil

o.k i need some help! I'm getting ready to drain and replace the gear oil on my max (96 se 5spd). Manual recommends the GL4 80-90W and that's all great. I just went down to autozone and this is the stuff this is what it has on the label - API Service GL-5, GL-4, GL-3. Has anyone used this stuff before? It seems its mixed up and from what I understand you CANNOT substitute GL-4 for any thing else. What's everyone think??

You can use GL-5, but the box shifts much better with GL-4. I had GL-5 in my gearbox for a year and replaced it with GL-4 Amsoil. It was the only one that I could find that was GL-4 only. 5-speed shifts like butter now. I am not going back to GL-5. Not in my MAX!!

GL-5 will also corrode your syncros and other brass/bronze metals

I would recommend the redline MT-40, car shifts great, even in cold weather.
