Replace the crank shaft position sensor (POS). It's located on the bell housing of the transmission, under and twards the front of the car.

He probably replaced the REF crank sensor which looks at the lower pully. That sensor will not cause a no start condition.

Could be grounding issues. Did the mechanic clean the mating surface of the block/tranny? That is known to cause some irratic starting issues. I had that problem, my starter was also ready to pack it in, replaced it with a new one, added 2 ground cables to the starter/tranny housing and were good.

My problems were it would crank, sound like the battery was dying, then crank normal and start. Eventually it would just sit there and crank for like 10 seconds before it start, only while it was warm though. Replaced the starter and kept my 2 ground cables and were good!
