Steering wheel and car shake at speeds over 30 mph...

.. What could it be besides a bent rim/bad tire?

I really doubt it's those things as I haven't really hit anything big on the road lately and this problem just surfaced less than a week ago, getting worse and worse by the day.

At 1st it only shook at 70 mph+.. then it was 60.. then 50.. now in a day it shakes at 30.. if i just creep at 20 mph in neutral and let go of the wheel it shakes side to side by itself but the car still goes straight.

Only other suspension issue that i slept on and never fixed was a slight clunking noise going over bumps that i could feel in my steering wheel as well.. and it wasn't the struts or springs.. as i changed them and the problem was still there.

So any ideas?
I drive a lot and I hope it's not dangerous.

thanks

Ever consider getting an alignment?

Yeah, I had that problem too earlier this year, just needed to get the wheels re-aligned and it was fine again

Ya I have the same problem. How much is that alignment and balancing costs? Also where can it be done?

well, if you're just getting an alignment, make sure you tell them you just want the front toe aligned... those are the only adjustable parts anyways and u can save big bucks. If you don't tell them that, they will charge you for a full alignment, when there's nothin in the rear to align.

Someone please confirm this.. i heard it once before, haven't actually had an alignment myself yet.

Balancing the wheels would probably cost you $10-$15 per tire... at least that's how much it costs me if I didn't have my service life warranty.

does the problem come in so suddenly when the alignment goes bad?

it literally got worse in days..

and correct me if i'm wrong, but I thought a poor alignment would cause the car to pull in different directions if it's bad??????? not shake...

I had the exact problem got it aligned... also got my warped rotors replaced (it would wobble while braking more, maybe a combo of the both?) try getting it aligned, would be a good idea anyway

yea, warped rotors will make it vibrate on braking.. but shouldn't do anything when you just drive..

so i take it the alignment fixed your problem along with having the rotors replaced?

rotors replaced ONLY if you have a problem, lol...dont spend more money than u need too. the problem can progressively get worse and worse. if something is out of alignment and u drive, it can progressively move further and further out of alignment. therefore getting more wobbly, and at lower speeds too

I guess an out of balance tire. With it getting worse suddenly, I'd check your wheel weights to see if one has fallen off (you should be able to see a mark where one was if it's not there anymore). You can also rotate tires front to rear to see if the vibration follows.
The above is all free to do, so you won't be out anything except some time.
