Car is STUCK in park!
Car is STUCK in park!
My 1995 maxima GXE wont come out of park. It isnt the brake lights and yes Im putting my foot on the brake. Strange enough if it sits for a number of hours (atleast 4-6) it will come out the first try and only the first. After that it sticks right back in park. Does anyone know whats up with the transmission?
BTW it starts fine with no wierd noises. Im wondering if it has to do with the alarm I had installed a month ago?
thanks

mine did the same thing, it would stay in park. For some reason it pretty much stopped doin' it, but this is what i used to do. Hold your foot on the brake, and hold the button on the shifter to shift it out of park, if it doesnt go, then hold the button down and jiggle the shifter in a circular motion and it should release. Let me know how it turned out.
Open up the shifter console and in there, there is a couple of white realeses. One works When you are on park, and you put your foot on the brake it realeses the shifter. the other works when you push the botton. The one that lets you shift out of park is broken and sometimes its loose enough to let you shift out of park. When mine started having problems, I just broke it off and now I can shift out of park without the brake. I dont recommend this as a permanent solution but its a good qiuck fix.
Found out something cool just today when working on my wife's '95 auto Max. When you turn the key to "acc", you do not have to mash the brake pedal to get it out of park. When you turn the key to "on", of course you have to mash the brake pedal. If you run into a problem where it will not come out of park at all, turn the key to "acc", put the car in neutral and start it from there, then put it in reverse or drive to get away.
If you park on a hill, put the gear in park, and while still holding your foot on the brakes, pull up the hand brake. That way, you use the handbrake to hold the car in that situation, and not park. DW

If you allow it to roll back when you put it in park, its going to have a hard time coming out since its on the transmission stop.

i think he's haveing my problem, there's a selenoid down there that pushes the lock forward. you have three options: 1 get a new selenoid, 2 break off the tab, and three, pull the trim loose and manually diengage it (every time) which is what i'm doin.
I had the same issue but it was intermittent. "Wiggling" it around wasn't the solution. Cold weather made it worse, but it started after my daughter dumped a sugary soft drink down the AT shifter console.
The solution was to pull the shift lever cover to access the shifter module. On the left side is a cable that is operated with the shift lever release button. On this one is was moving very very slow. So I sprayed it with some WD40 and worked it back and forth. No more issues. I also sprayed the right side where you see the shift release button pressing down a pawl.
