how much is a new cat?

I had my tranny flushed a week or so ago at the dealer and they brought to my attention about my cat needing to be replaced soon. I only quickly glanced at it, but the price he had on the sheet for a new one is $800. Is that right?! Or did I hopefully not read it right. I searched a few sights for them, and nobody has any. And I want an OEM, not random tech. or test pipe.

Yes, a new OEM cat will cost that much. Why do you want an OEM that bad?

Why do they think it needs to be replaced? I can't imagine you could tell from looking at the outside of it.

What ejj said why would you ant a factory cat?? Aftermarket high flow cats are $200, a generic bolt in replacement from your auto store should be around $100.

I dont plan on keeping the car too much longer, and dont want to have a potential buyer take it somewhere to have it checked out and then have them see a high flow and give me a hard time or something. And based on the miles (~130,000). I am hoping they didnt take my exhaust off or something while it was in there, but I wondered the same thing, how would they tell by looking at it from the outside?

Unless it was rusting through, they couldn't. If you cat stops working you'll get a CEL.

If you went to Mike Barney, well, they're a bunch of *******s and are trying to scam you.

Leave the stock one on until you sell it. If it ain't broke...

Good luck with mom.

She bought her car there and have been ok with it. It was ridiculous though, I'll never go back there again. They took 3 hours to do a tranny flush. I wanted to go back there and ask what the hell is wrong w/ them and if they know what they were doing.

Buying Carl's car?

No, MB doesn't know what they are doing. I buy parts there once and a while, but AutoPlace is much better if you have to go to a dealership. My brother worked there for a while (detailing), and they let me come in and have a look around the service department. They actcually had knowledgable people that had their act together.

It's not an exact diagnosis but if you bang on the cat - not the furry thing but the metal thing under your car, and you hear a lot of 'stuff' rattling around inside, your catalyst is starting to break down little by little. If there's a lot a rattling most places are going to mention that you should think about replacing your cat soon.

Ok, so my cat is rattling now. I know it's bad on the environment, but how bad is it on performance?

If it's breaking down, it can start pluggin up, less flow is no for the go.

I actually had one completely breakdown on a previous car. I had a camaro, just had a friend fix a problem and was leaving his house. I turn the corner and hit the gas. The car started seriously hesitating, I hit the gas harder of course. Here I am bucking down the steet when all of a sudden BOOM, a big could of brown dust/smoke behind me and I LAUNCH down the steet. The catalyst all broke free and blew a 6" dia hole in my muffler. I was free flowin.

About three months before I had it in a muffler shop getting looked at and the guy said, "I can't work on your muffler unless I put on a new catalytic converter since it's shot". I blew it off, and later my car blew it away.
