trouble starting

I have a 98 Max... SE auto. I put an intake ... strut tower brace..rims.. the whole works *system too. about a month ago my car started to have trouble startin up. It will start.. but after too many cranks. and when it does it kicks out some raw fuel (i can smell raw fuel, from the tail pipe). It runs fine but it's getting to me. There is no check engine light on.

A week ago when installin my new amp and sub, i disconnected the battery, when i hooked it back up about an hour later the car started great, NO PROBLEM. it kicked right over.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Im a college kid .. on a limited budget so i have to fix it myself!

Thanks

The exact same thing happened to me a while ago. Turned out that my alternator had gone bad. Nissan replaced that....and it STILL happened. Got the battery checked(bad) and replaced...and everythings been good since.

Hope it helps...

Your hard start is probably caused by a weak signal from the crank position sensor (POS). It's located under the car on the transmission bell housing twards the front. Take the sensor out and clean off the fine metalic dust that collects on the magnetic tip of that sensor.

There's another crank shaft position sensor (REF) thats located under your lower pully. It's easy to get access to it by turning the steering wheel full right and pulling back the plastic cover in the wheel well. Take that sensor out and clean off the fine metalic dust that collects on it's magnetic tip.

If you still have hard starts your engine coolant temp sensor might be out of spec. It's located near the thermostat housing. Follow the upper radiator hose until you get to the engine block. There are two sensors there, the one thats closest to the engine block is the sensor in question.

A Haynes shop manual will help you trouble shoot your cars electronic systems.

i also have a starting problem... every time i let my car sit for a few hrs or overnite and get cold, it usually takes about 3 times to get it started. i recently cleaned my Throttle Body to see if this was the culprit, but it didnt help... My engine tries to start but the idles jump and then soon die.. i checked for loose connections on my intake and my battery is brand new, anyone have any ideas??? thanks

reading:
Altough where the upper rad hose connects to the block does look like a thermostat housing, the thermostat is on the other end of the block. it is located in a housing where the lower rad hose returns to the block.

Check to see if you have an aftermarket starter in there. It will crank ok, but somehow the crank position sensor count goes off and the coils and injectors dont fire correctly. Sometimes it will crank for a long time before starting. This might not have anything to do with your problem, but it is fairly common for cheap starters to cause starting problems on 4th gen maximas. Let me know what you find.

Huh? What does the starter have to do with anything other than
turning the crank at a reasonabe speed?. The only connection
that I can come up with is if the cheap starters are more likely to
shed metal particles that could foul the crank sensor. Other than
cranking, it has nothing to do with the engine actually starting
successfully.
