Fixing YOUR Starter (Not mine)

I just thought, I know theres a few people here that have to get their starters fixed because of old grease and whatnot... Well, I was considering to do if for people on the org. Not sure about how much to charge, so what do you guys think? Should I do it? and how much should i charge...?

Do it for the satisfaction of knowing you helped someone out?

Well....I mean I'm not gunna do it for free, but I'm not gunna go crazy on what to charge. I was thinking anywhere between $20-$40 to completely disassemble, regrease, and test.

I am just offering the service, some people would rather have someone else do it for them because of all the parts that need to be disassembled. If you guys want, I could probably make a write up with diagrams when I get back from work today.

I had that problem with the grinding and I fixed mine fine. Right now, the only problem I have with my starter is that it sometimes it takes 3-4 turns of the key for it to actually crank. Hopefully I'll just be getting a new starter soon, because of the damn solenoid...

I have the same stupid problem of having to turn the key 2-5 times for it to start. Just haven't put the money down yet to get a new starter.

Thought I'd add some stuff to this thread for you guys with starter problems:

Nissan sells the solenoids separately for ~$66, 30% off that if you go through Jerry Rome online this month and use the code. Beats the heck out of $150-$200 for a aftermarket starter or $245 for an OEM rebuilt, if all you need is a solenoid. Nobody makes an aftermarket replacement solenoid for the Max. Tried in vain at auto parts stores and online searches. It's pressed together so you can't take it apart, clean it lube it and put it back together either. Should've occured to me to check dealer parts listings first, DOH!! Nissan also sells starter motor brushes and bushings for motor rebuilds.

Are you saying that the Nissan rebuilt starter is somewhat worse than our original starters?

I have a new starter (Nissan's, bought from Jerry Rome) and my car is preped to install the new one in (took all the intake plumbing).

But, I would probably just change the solenoids on the original starter if the new starter is not as good.

I'm just saying that solenoids are available separately if thats all you need. Could save a guy some $$ if only the solenoid is bad, no need to spend the extra money on the whole starter assy. JR Nissan only lists a rebuilt starter for the 95-99 Max, for $245 before discount,~$170+ S&H after discount. The rebuilts should be good quality.
