How much should I pay for a Tune-up?

Hey, just wondering what a tune up might cost, the Nissan dealer wants $229, that sound like a lot. Can some one tell me what the going rate should be. I'm in California if it helps. Thanks.

Depends on what they plan on doing in the tuneup. 229 doesnt sound that bad to me.

$229 sounds cheap if it includes brake pads.

i also k its not bad, since dealers charge about 75 bucks/hour for labor............so if you don't want to do it yourself, you'll never get too much below 200

But what does dealer mean by tune up? spark plugs and "check everything"........if thats the case definately DIY

Agreed. Doesn't sound like they are going to do much in terms of tuning up. You're best be is to get the parts and do it yourself.

Pay as much as it takes to buy the parts. A 60k can easily be done yourself.

What all do you do in a tuneup? Mine is approaching 130K and I only had it for 3 months (12K miles), so I don't know what has and hasn't been done to it.
Thanks for all your input

New plugs, air filter, fuel filter, PCV valve, clean TB, clean IACV, and oil change. You can do a coolant flush and change the tranny fluid if you want. http://www.motorvate.ca has some useful info.

Change the knock sensor if you have the ghost code. If you have the money, change the O2 sensors. Check your tire pressures

Ghost code is a code that doesn't turn on the CEL (Check Engine Light). If a knock sensor goes bad, it won't turn on the CEL and tell you (other things will). You have to check the car for codes and if it shows 0505 then everything is working fine.

Guys, please excuse my ignorance and enlighten me how do you get those codes you are talking about? Do you have to plug a lap top to the ECU or what? I want to find out if my KS is bad.

maciek read the stickies at the top of the 4th gen board. I'd explain but it's easier if you just check'em out yourself...

good price? well all depends on what you want done. I had my mechanic do everything in the Haynes manual at 63,000 miles, new front brake pads and rotated rotors all for about $239. That also included every filter, spark plugs, coolant flush, tranny fluid, clutch fluid..mmm I think that's it..I'd have to look in the book for a full list. Good luck!
