differential bearings and a turbine like whine in 1st gear...
I have a turbine like whine in 1st gear....characteristic of failing differential bearings....nevertheless, how long can i run on these bearings b4 failure? What will happen when they fail....will the tranny just take a dump on me and refuse to go anywhere? in either case, I am looking at a 5spd LSD tranny to replace it with and i forgot that site url where you select the part you want...and it returns where and what company is selling and for how much.....its kinda like a huge classifieds online for specific car parts/components....anyway...i understand i will also need only the driver side axle correct?
My maxima has a whine, groan or whatever you want to call it in first and reverse. They both have a different sound to them, but it doesn't sound to odd to me. I have had the car for 4K miles and it has done it since I had it. I changed the tranny fluid and I saw no shavings in the fluid. I just recently changed my axles and I have no play in them. I really think it is just a standard low gear groan that I am getting, but who knows. I have read other guys who have driven a lot of maximas and they all make noises in first in reverse.

Right - check for other tell-tale symptoms as in leakage before you go swapping out the trannies. Whine in 1st and R are normal. If you get whine in 2-5, that's usually an indication along with leakage/axle play.
Also, remember that the 5-speed LSD tranny's from either and I30 or a CDM max also are **** to bearing failure. So what ever you buy have the bearing shim checked before install.
I have been searching the forum but could really find what problem I have. Sometimes, especcially when tranny is cold I have difficulty switching into 1 gear (I have 5sp), I kinda need to push it there and it is even worse with reverse (I shift into 1 and 2 and then it would go into R somehow). Are the bearings dead already....???
Enormous thanks in advance!!!

that has nothing to do with ur bearings, try and see if when u want to go into reverse u press the clutch in again instead of staying on it, that might help.... i dont know what else to say except that it COULD possibly be ur synchro's
