if you want stick...yeah

if not, why? you have leather and all that other good stuff

this is not our decision really, if you want stick, consider it but make sure you know the car in and out since it does have 95k on it

how many do you have?

its entirely your call. If you want luxury and an auto., go w/ GLE, if you want sporty and a 5-speed go w/ SE, as always u can mod both. Either way let us know what you decided overall and good luck w/ whatever you get.

Also, what kind of guy is he? Does he take car of it? Has it had any major problems? Does it feel strong? If all is favorable I would go with the SE, but remember that 5K can make a huge difference depending on the car.

there are 3 newer bodies over both of these cars, so i say that the 98 or 99 dont matter. they are both over 5 years old!
if u had auto b4 and wanna try manual then go for it. i would also look for SE only!

more problems would occur that way than if he didn't most likely

also, that would cost money and with that extra money he could get a less mileage SE

95 k is nothing for that car.As was said here ,is important who the actual owner of the car is and how good is the car taken care of. I replaced a 99 GXE 5 speed with 48 k with a 96 SE 5 sp with 132 k. I trusted the car so much that I took it to Florida and back from upstate New York.

Even if the SE isn't fully-loaded it still isn't a question in my mind, but I wouldn't have a GLE to begin with, so what do I know.

so, what are the options on the SE? If it is fully loaded, and has all the fixins a GLE has plus a spoiler standard, 5-spokes, fogs, and no minima-GXE chrome, AND a 5-speed, it would have to be in pretty bad comparative shape to be a "no".

You should get the 99 SE with a stick. The standard car will get you more independence with your car and a lot more control. Personally i don't like automatic because you lack control of your car. Even though the car has 5k more than the automagic, the 99 SE has more sporty attachments to it. GET THE 99 SE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He never said how many miles his car has, also there is no 99 SE mentioned anywhere in this thread...

Get whatever car you like best, taking in to account differences in options. Personally, I wouldn't decide on a car just because it's a 5 speed. Think of all the pro and cons. For me, a 5 speed has many more cons than an auto, mainly in convenience issues. And for those who will yell that a 5 speed is faster, an auto is more consistent and predictable. I would sacrifice a possible couple of 10ths for consistency. In a road race or pursuit, consistency is key.
A lot of people think that having a 5 speed is "cool" and treat it as a status symbol. I'll gladly give up the "coolness" for the convenience of an auto. As for the status symbol, autos have a higher resale value. Would you sacrifice convenience for being "cool"?
Some people prefer 5 speeds. I've been driving them for many years. I prefer an auto for most driving. Constantly shifting gets old in traffic and around town driving.
Takentomax, I have just as much control of an auto as a 5 speed, if not more. In an auto, I can have both hands on the wheel to shuffle steer, and drive double footed for quicker reaction times. That makes for much better control.
If both cars mentioned were taken care of properly, I think the mileage difference is negligible. I'd go with the one that has the most options you'd use (would you use heated seats often in the south? I have no problem with cold seats). Would you use foglights? Sunroof? I'd also consider overall condition (interior, paint, etc...). And do you plan on modding it, or leaving stock. If modding the suspension, the SE's "sport" suspension is a moot point.
Overall, there are a lot of factors to look at. But the ultimate decision should be based on what you want.

Depends entirely on how well taken care of the car is. How is the paint and how about oil changes/etc. Stick is essential but I wouldn't trade a better taken care of car for it...

i thought u meant SE vs GLE in general. Benefit with SE is that you can find an SE with all the features of a GLE (like mine) but u cant find a GLE with stick. But yea like everyone says, depends on what u prefer, whats more important, whats hardest to change for u. I rather have stick and buy aftermarket leather later on than have a GLe and convert to stick later on.

The SE that im looking at is not nearly as nice as my GLE. The SE is loaded and is just like my GLE except my GLE is in much better condition but I really want a manual. It's just a hard decision because I want a manual but the car is not in as good condition as the one I have.

Sounds like a loaded SE. But does it have any badging on the rear? I don't think the SEs came with badges but I do see some GLEs around that have a GLE badge at the back, on the bottom right hand corner of the trunk. Then I've also seen GLEs without badging... STRANGE!!!

One question... does it have foglights? If so, then it is definetly an SE. GLE did not come with white face gauges but spoiler and foglights are optional on the GLE.

It depends on the history of the SE and the number of miles your GLE has. If the SE is fully loaded, I would personally go with the SE (assuming that it has been well taken care of in the past). You know your car, so make sure that whatever you get is better.

How much time and money is involved in doing a transmission swap form a auto to a manual. And where do you get the parts and know how.

also check to see if your grill, door handles, and trim are black or chrome...if they are black then it is an SE.chrome then its a GLE.

'95 and '96 GLEs don't wear the GLE badge on the tail....only the '97's-'99's do

You'd be better off and spend less money trading your GLE for an SE, if you want 5-spd.

doing a 5spd swap is usually something you would attempt being very experienced mechanically. not something to try if you aren't totally attached to your car.

As for trading it in...
If it were me, I'd probably do it, as 5 thousand miles more is negligable, especially considering it's a year older.. As for the SE... foglights are dope.. I would hate not havin em, they light up the road like a christmas tree, and I love the sliding sunroof, rain or shine

Why step down in the quality of car just for a manual? Sounds a bit impetuous to me. If you want a manual that bad, take your time and find one that meets your standards for quality and performance.

I say go with the SE. I am a little partial to a manual shift, but that is just because any performance mods can be done without the worry of messing up your auto tranny.
The SE looks great, and you can get one loaded up like a GLE(mine is other than manual), but if you really want sporty and are going to put new rims on it anyway...go find a GXE manual. They are actually lighter, but you will not get a lot of the extras that the SE has.
Just up to you what you want.
Personally, having an automatic tranny with that many miles, I would be much more prone to getting a manual with even a few more miles. But, like the other guys said, if the guy's car you are looking at has not been taken care of, just keep looking. There are plenty of Maxs out there.

Good luck!
