My brother has a white 97SE and I have a pebble beige metallic 96SE. We both have beigh leather interior. The only differences are:

--97 has black steering wheel, 96 has brown. Both have brown dash board though.
--Cupholder in center console are different. 97 comes with a cover, 96 does not.

But in 98 they put digital odometer and different BOSE stereo panel.

This is copied from the Edmunds site http://www.edmunds.com/used/1997/nis...a/gxe5spd.html

For 1997, the Maxima receives some minor exterior changes that clean up the front and rear end a bit. New tail lights improve the car's derriere, but we still wish that the trunk weren't so angular. We do, however, really like the new wheels/wheel covers that were introduced for this model year. They make the Maxima more distinctive than last year's model.

If oyu have auto climate control, they changed the controls just a little and the steering wheel is ever so slightly different (less square in the middle).

Speaking of auto climate control, can that be integrated into a max without the climate control? I think that the digital look is a lot nice than a little **** and several buttons.

This was discussed last week. Someone said that the cost of changing it over was over 3000 dollars, making it theoretically possible but cost prohibitive. You have to install new sensors, wiring, HVAC, etc.
