darn rickety maxima (rant)

i'm not sure about other model maximas, but my 4th gen rattles and squeaks so damn much. i feel its gotten a lot worse lately...my car is a 97 and has just hit 100k miles. my parents have a 98 accord with similar mileage and their car still feels so solid...i wonder what honda does to make their cars stay so stiff...

So you are saying your 97 isn't so SoLiD anymore? hahaha sorry I just had to.

anyhow I know the feeling. Mines starting to rattle like a pontiac. Just turn the radio up louder or get an exhaust to drown out the noise.

I wonder if the age of the struts has anything to do with it? My 96 GXE is pusing 82k and still on the stock struts. Brake dive and roll is not too bad and it passes the bounce test fine etc. But I still feel that a new set of struts will really improve ride quality. Gotta start saving up....

I must be one of the lucky ones because my Maxima never has exhibited lots of rattles. With the Stage I/II SFCs, the car barely has any rattles unless I hit a large bump. I test drove 4 other 4th gen Maximas (96-97) and most of them had lots of rattles. My 96 is completely different.

Most of my rattles are stereo-related, or at least helped by the 12" in the trunk. My center console has rattled since I installed my HU, tiny piece of foam tape would do the trick there. Gauge cluser, I don't know why, but it started up around 100k. The rear deck, pillars, etc...heh, those are strange. I swear they don't creek and rattle the same way twice, and sometimes they're fine. Sunroof rattle I take as inevitable sunroof rattle.

The trunk is a symphony of rattles with such performers as the row of LEDs on the spoiler, the metal plate behind the seats, and more. Those were pre-stereo and weren't all that audible with the pass-thru closed, but with it open and the sub pumping....

Most if not all can be dealt with, and in general, with 107k on the odometer, and the pass-thru closed, I think it's alright all things considered.

I was exaggerating a bit actually. I have one rattle that comes from somewhere behind my guage cluster and that's it. I used to be able to get rid of it by smacking the dash, it would go away for like a day or two. Now that doesn't work. SFCs did alot to solidify the car, but being as it's on ground controls its still pretty harsh over bad roads, but not nearly as bad as it was pre-SFC. SFCs own.

yeah--I have heard some of the same noises on my 98 max--92K miles--i have gotten the same noise from my gauge cluster--- but also there is a big rattle coming from my door which i think is the window regulator(as someone pointed out) so i got to take the door apart

haha yea, thats exactly what i'm saying. my sunroof has an annoying rattle, and i get this damn squeaking from the point where the dash, door and pillar connect. it sounds like the plastics are rubbing against eachother while the body of the car is flexing.

knock on wood...

mine's been pretty good so far. I have one rattle in the passenger a-pillar area (tweeter grille?) and just exorcised one really annoying squeaky rattle in the rear c-pillar. otherwise it's pretty solid.

that squeaky rattle was driving me nuts though. finally it got loud enough to pinpoint, so I just cranked my bass all the way up so I could hear where it was coming from, found it, then pushed on the pillar trim a little. all gone.

sometimes the rattles bug me enough to want to get something a lot newer. guess the NYC/JC roads don't help too much.

Yea my Max rattles alot too..It's probably due to the age and mileage of the car. Damn annoying. Plus, about 2 grand worth of suspsension work doesn't help it either!

Mine has rattles and squeaks too, but if i had had as rough a life as my car, i would too.

-HItting that light pole really helped things along too
