torque converter?

Hello, everyone. I was wondering if you could do anything to your torque converter so that it doesnt rob so much power from us automatic owners. The reason is because i raced my brother today who has a prelude which has a couple of mods and he smoked my ***. He says that my torque converter robs me of alot of my power and i was wondering if any of you max owners knew anything about this. YOur help would be much appreciated.

Another short answer...

Get rid of it, replace it with a clutch and flywheel.

Riiiiiiiiiiiight.....So i guess this is what those guys were talking about when they said the forums have gone down the tubes.

Back on-topic: You will never get the responsiveness of a 5-speed from an automatic. Whether you manually change gears, do the drop-resistor mod, or go for an aftermarket torque converter.

Your brother telling you that you lost because of your torque converter is BS. what kind of mods does he have? what kind of mods do you have?
what kind of race was it (highway/stand-still)?

there's a lot of things that can determine a race besides whether it's a 5-speed vs. an auto. Hell, if the 5-speed driver can't launch right, then the auto driver can take him with little effort.

The issue of aftermarket torque converters has been brought up before. I hate to sound like a broken record, but if you search, you can find more. If i remember correctly, the outcome was that it made more sense cost-wise to take the money that would be spent on an aftermarket torque converter and use it towards mods that would give the car more low-end power, or just save up for a 5-speed conversion.

In the end, it's not just one thing that caused you to lose. Don't believe everything your brother says.

major mistake: "will i be able to beat him if........"

Yes.No.Maybe. Who knows? Is it your intention to have a modded max so that you can claim total supremacy of the road, or do you just want to beat your brother? If that's the case, it seems like your kinda wasting your cash.

In the end, the prelude has a lot more mods readily availible for cheaper than the max does. The max can be the better performing machine, it's just going to take more money.

For example, find out how much cams for his prelude are. I'm willing to bet that there's more than one company that produces them, and they're cheaper than ours. Maxima cams are produced solely by JWT and run around $1100, at least the last i heard.

Y-pipe and cat-back will help, don't waste your money on a high-flow cat. I think the last i heard was that there were only gains of like 1HP, and that it's only really useful if you're boosted. But that won't guarantee a win.

save your money and get a turbo, then you'll be top dog. For a while. Then he'll save his money and make his car as fast as yours, and you guys will go back and forth. Why don't you save yourselves money and just go outside and beat the crap out of each other?

well, well topdog, you bro has a lot of mod on the car...you just intake, ok.heres my opinion.
maxima more weight.
maxima more torque.
maxima more power.

So if you have y pipe, intake and catback you will win without problem. Just dont forget if you want to use the 100% of each mod you should add the 3 mod in the same time.
intake=more air going in, y pipe(2.5 inch)=more space for air coming for the engine, catback=fast air exhaust.

it will add like 30 hp for your car.

thanks guys. And by the way intend to mod the h*ll out of my max and my bro is just going to be my first victim. But in all honesty, i just want my max to have more performance and look good at the same time. So if i get a y-pipe, cat back i should be squared away? Keep them coming guys. I look to you for suggestions on how to make my max a performance demon on wheels.

Might as well get a technosquare or JWT ECU and an underdrive pulley if you have the money, together they could drop your 1/4 mile by like .15-.2 seconds. Definatly look in the 1/4 and 1/8 mile racing forum for the how-to on the drop resistor mod, people have been seing a drop in their 1/4 mile time by almost .2 seconds just from that.
