help....my airhorns quit
help....my airhorns quit
ok this is the deal...i hooked up a FIAMM dual airhorn kit in my 96 maxima by using a small metal braket from home depot. they r mounted at the same location of the stock horn near the coolant resevior. well after all was mounted and wired i tested it and it worked...for awhile. i used the "short-cut" method without the relay and now when i hit my horn, only the stock horn near the front grill blows. i was wondering why the airhorns arent blowing anymore???? maybe bad compressor?? tested the wires and all is good...so i dont know where to go from here. Can somebody please give me so help?!!?
It could be a bad compressor. I used to have the FIAMM triple air horns and they lasted a good long time, but that's because I used the supplied relay. Try checking if the compressor is bad by just testing the compressor itself on a 12V source. I've heard that installing without the relay is pretty bad, especially after you try to honk for a really long time, it usually fails.
Check your fuse for your horn. You should have a separate fuse and relay for it since it does draw alot of current. You can get a fuse holder (30 amp) at a automotive store and connect it directly to the batt. A relay should of come with you air horn.
thanks for the info guys...keep it coming!! i replaced the smaller horn fuse thats in the small rectangular fuse box at the far right of engine bay with another "10" fuse, then tried a "15" and even a "25" but still no sound. how do i go about testing the larger horn, horn 2 and horn 3 fuses or is that even necessary? the stock horn still works so i dont think its a fuse but what should i do....i keep running into dead-ends??!!

i just got done playing around with the horns - i removed stock horn near grill (the only one that blows) and unplugged the airhorns, then plugged the stock horn into the stock wire that had gone to the airhorns...and...no sound. so i think the compressor is fine and that the positive wire from the stock hornnear the coolant resevior is bad. anyone know how to replace or what to do now?? any help?? thanks!
To check the compressor, take two pieces of wire, connect to + and - to the associated terminals on the compressor. Then ground one wire to the car or battery, and quickly (don't leave it for more that a split second) touch the other wire to the + on the battery. If you hear the compressor kick on, then it is your wiring or fuse.
I've installed both FIAMM and Hella air horns on 6 different cars. I've never had the compressor go bad, but, have had the horns stop producing sound, guess from getting clogged or something. The hella's have never gone bad on me, just the FIAMM's.
What has often happend is that the horns work for a few days, then blow the fuse. Upgrade your fuse another 5 amps and you should be fine. Also, on the two Maxima's that I've installed to, I did not leave any of the factory horns wired. I spliced together both wires from both factory horns to the + and - of the compresor.
Make sure you have checked the fuse for the horn AND the alarm. One of those is the one that has blown. I can almost gaurantee it's just a fuse, and once you find it, just uprate it by 5 amps.
hope it works out.
