umm flames? does he litterally mean flames? don't think thats likely. the only way i see it being possible and i could be wrong, but i see it like this: is gas is unused/your running rich, and the fumes they ignite. now what does the ignition come from? you need a spark like from a sparkplug...
oh and yes its probably bad. cars arn't ment to throw flames out from anywhere last i heard.

since you hallowed out your cat, there might be excell fuel being ignited and you are able to see it out the back. More of what your friends are seeing is probably a brief spark, not actually a flame, due to how wide open your exhaust is.
My bro has a VW GTI with the VR6 engine, and some other mods. Well, he took his cat off totally and it is pretty much just straight back. His does that quite often. Shouldn't hurt anything....just wastes fuel.

Perhaps he's got a bad plug, which isn't burning the fuel in a cylinder?

Go ahead and bolt a sparkplug to your exhaust, near your tip...and wire it up to the middle console. Then, when you want flames, just touch the wire to a 9volt battery......

My bro's car I was talking about is silly loud though to be able to do that. It is just straight back without a cat or mid-resonator. I don't like the way it sounds. It isn't a Maxima!!!

If they look like this G20 get some help! Seriously though, check your spark plugs, air filter, and put I'd the cat back in. I'd just keep it down around the police. (all engines will flame if the exhaust pipes are very short, why do you think lawmowers and snowblowers have a "spark arrester"?)

Hey boyscout, where would u mount the spark plug at? does the tip spark need to be inside the muffler somewhere or how would it work?
I have a test pipe on as of now and id like to see how this works while i got some free time coming up soon.
and which wire from the 9v to the what part of the sparkplug?
