brake pad replacement question

i am going to try and do my brakes myself for the first time. i was looking through the haynes manual and it doesnt look too hard. i was just wondering where the caliper pin was that has to be removed and greased (P. 9-6 step 3.5j)

also, why do we have to remove teh upper and lower pad retainers when all we do is replace them (inspection purposes?)

on the pads themselves, there are two with clips and two without, how do they go?

last one
it says install the shims on the pads (back of pad i guess) then put anti-squeal compound on the back of both pads...does this mean put anti-squeal on the back of the shim

sorry for all the questions, i just wanna make sure i have everything down before i start

ok that was a great site but it doesnt say anything about anit squeal

anyways i went to take a look at the brake setup. i unbolted the lower bolt and swung the caliper up. the bolt was in a pin? that looks like the one being lubed in the haynes manual. is this the one to grease? if so what do i need the c-clamp for or the weird disc brake tool autozone gave me for?

thanks

The c-clamp is used to push the piston's inward so that the new brake pad has enough room to fit into the housing. This is usually cause the old brkaes are pretty thin and thus the pistons are extended outwards to reach the everso thining brake pad. The new brake pads are rather large and usually can't fit into the same space that used can. Thus compressing the pistol in order for it to retracting within it's housing.

Ciao

Bro, I just changed my brakes (fronts), the caliper pin you're looking for is at the bottom, has a rubber covering with the head of the bolt/pin sticking out of the rubber. Rubber is ribbed and is flexible, pin will slide back and forth slightly. Its not attached to the caliper that you swing up at all, its still at the bottom of the disc. Just pry rubber back and pop it off but don't slit or break the rubber housing. Also, don't worry about the retainers, I never took them off either. Good luck, and look at the Haynes manual, its all there.
