Does anyone know what an EVAP canister control valve is? I just went and checked the computer in my car, and got the code 09 03, and that's what the diagnosis is. Is it something major, is it expensive, etc? Any help you guys could give would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

EVAP

I know it. It happened to my car.

Good news. Your federal warranty, not the Nissan one, will cover that issue for a period of 3 years/50K miles. This federal warranty applies to any vehicle in the US, and covers any emissions related issues, which this one is.

The actual control valve is under the left rear tire, where you will also find the charcoal canister. The purpose of the valve is to vent the fumes from the gas tank up to the engine to be burned with combustion.

When it happened to me, my Nissan dealer made me pay for it. I called up 1-800 Nissan, faxed them the invoice, and they paid me back.

Hope this helps.

Diagnostic Trouble Code 0903 indicates a problem with the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Vent Control Valve or its associated electric circuit.

This part is used by the Engine Control Module to perform the fuel system leak test. Since it is used only for self-diagnosis your engine will run perfectly well despite the dashboard Malfunction Indicator Lamp.

The EVAP canister and this valve are located under the car, near the rear left tire. You might check to make sure all the electrical connectors in that area are secure.

There's no telling how expensive the repair will be, because no definite diagnosis has been made. Maybe you just have to re-plug a loose connector. Since the EVAP system is part of the emissions control system you might have warranty coverage.

My '99 Maxima factory service manual references Diagnostic Trouble Code 0903 on pages EC-3, EC-4, EC-354.

DTC 0903 also appears in Haynes on page 6-7. However, I am unable to find it in Chilton.

DTC 0903 is decoded at http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecudecoder.html

I replaced mine

It cost me approximatley $50 for the control valve. Install was a breeze.

Daniel, I guess there must be a difference between a 95 and a 99 FSM because I do not have that code. The code "87" is the Canister Control Solenoid Valve in my book which is a close (or maybe exactly) what "woodagga" is talking about. He has e-mailed me asking about this but I suggested that he talk to you about it as you not only have the code in your FSM but also have better knowledge of what to do about it. Thanks.
