Brake Service Cost

I just took my '97 Max to STS tire and auto center to have my brakes looked at because they were squealing.

They came back and told me the car needs all new pads and rotors. They want about $780 to do this work. The car has over 85,000 miles. It's on original rotors and rear pads. Front pad were replaced around 40-50,000.

Is that price in line for the amount of work involved? Is that about how long rotors last?

780$$ is outragious, If you wanted to replace everything with oem you would probly be looking at 200 for the rotors and like 80 for pads,

But i just did my Brothers, and put PBR metal master pads(75.00) and new Brembo CD on the front (110.00) and his car has like 100k on it,
I would say take your rotors off take em to napa have them turn them(40.00 all 4) and get new pads and do it yourself, It will only take a morning to do.

i went to autozone and got the front rotors for like 26 a piece and the rears were 21 a piece. I got the pads from autozone too, about 35 bucks with lifetime replacement....do it yourself, its alot cheaper

you could get slotted rotors, stainless lines, and good pads all the way around for ALOT less. or you could do what Patel_anu did and save yourself about 600 bucks. Doing this yourself is really easy.

Paid $308.00 for my F/R drilled/slotted rotors and my Axxis metal master pads. Did it myself in about three hours. 780 dollars is insane!!!! Dam% rip offs.

Did my fronts for:
$26 x 2 rotors.
$20 for Raybestos pads w lifetime warranty. All @ pepboys (coulda went for $20 rotors at autozone, but I didn't feel like waiting for them to come in).

That's..$72 for fronts. Stops super great (thats industry standard terminology).

I might have to change the pads out every 2-3 years (no ceramic pads), but then again, I don't use my brakes much anyway (coast down hills, predict traffic patterns, etc.).

When it comes to brakes, garages always overkill the job to be done. They resurface the rotors when dont need, replace rotors with new ones when only need to be resurfaced, replaces calipers needlessly...Iwas tired of getting ripped off and learned to service and assess the brakes myself.

You can do the brakes yourself or pay someone local to you to do it for you. They overcharge brake jobs because they know people need it and they know that people will pay for it. "We'll fix it for $780 or you might die the next time you try to stop" I wonder what the majority of the customers are going to pick...

I want to do this too, just wondering if you brakes are squeaking/squealing or not. Did you replace your hardware/shim kit too?

Do your brakes squeak or squeal? Are these the Raybestos Quiet Stop pads? Did you replace the hardware/shim kit too?
