I just received my clear tails today for my 96 Max. Call me crazy but i think that I am not going to pain the bottom of the clear tail red, i like the clear look. Anyway, my question is when i take out the old tails, are the existing bulbs colored red? Or are the bulbs clear and so basically i have to paint the tails as to keep the car legal.

thanks

Bulbs

The stock bulbs are clear....becuse the red lens takes care of the light color....you don't have to paint your tails red, just get red replacement brake light bulbs....should be less than 5 bucks!

Would a place like Advance Auto parts have them or do they need to be ordered?

Just to clarify

Thanks guys

Just to clarify, the 1157s are the red and are the 1156 the amber ones?

Which numbers correspond to which of the three lights in the tail light assembly?

The 1157s are dual wattage....so they would be the red taillights...and the 1156 is single wattage..so it would be your turn signal

What makes a tail light illegal?

I paid 140 shipped to my door.

I put the tails on this afternoon after I couldnt find any red replacement bulbs at Advance Auto. Metallic97gxe mentioned http://www.aieonline as a place i could get them online. Anyone have experience dealing with them?

The clears look pretty good (i havent painted the bottoms red.....yet) but the clear bulb is hella bright at night and i know im just asking to get pulled over. Even though the max has the 3rd brake light and 2 other red brake lights, is driving around with any clear-bulbed brake light illegal?

pictures?

If you have a clear bulb, and a clear light, it will be a white flash, people are not accustom to a white flash as an indication of a turn signal, but rather to reverse or an emergency vehicle. The light needs to represent a certain color when flashing; this is universal for all cars, so yea a clear light with a clear bulb is illegal.

Same thing when you get clear corners in front, you can have clear bulbs with an orange light, but not clear bulbs with a clear light. You would need an orange bulb with a clear light to be legal in that case.

Can you post pictures without it being painted red, I only see pics of it when it's painted red I don't believe I've seen one without the paint job. Thanks.

Consistency is colors is what is legal, hence why you will never see a green brake light, since red means stop (stoplights, brake lights). When you see a white light when driving you sub-consciously pay close attention because you have been conditioned to. Mixing up colors and what they mean to different people would cause some serious road chaos (imo).

haha, as am I

OK i think i got it now, you ordered 2 pairs of the RED brake lights: 1 pair to replace ones on the trunk lid, the others for the turn signals....

Or did you leave the lights on the trunk lid alone and just get a pair of reds for the brake lights and a pair of reds for the turn signals.

Im sorry to keep asking questions, i dont want to mess this up..haha

thanks
