daniel, there was a post in the general forum about a way to "steam clean" your engine. the general idea was to find a hose with vacuum and dip into some water and then carb cleaner in order to clean deposits from your engine.
my question is that i was wondering if you thought this was a good idea or if you've heard of people doing this. also, would you have any recomendations for which hose to use seeing that 95/96's don't have the hose that the original poster used.
i've mentioned this to some friends and they can't see how this would be a good idea. seeing that you're pretty much the guru when it comes to technical knowledge i thought i'd run it past you first. any info would be greatly appreciated.

I am reluctant to spray water on the engine. Water gets into all sorts of places where it doesn't belong. It causes annoying intermittent electrical problems which may not show up right away.

I don't clean my engine. If I wanted to clean it, this is how I would do it.

1) Start with a warm (not hot) engine.

2) Use a compressed air blow gun to blow off as much loose dirt as possible.

3) Spray the engine with a water displacing cleaner such as WD-40.

4) Wipe the engine with clean rags. Use a paint brush to reach those inaccessible nooks and crannies. Follow up with another clean rag wipe-down.

sorry bout that daniel. my last post probably wasn't very clear. the idea that i was actually talking about was to find a hose with vacuum and actually dip the hose into a container with water. the water is supposed to be taken into the engine and produce a "steam clean" effect inside the engine. then you are supposed to do the same thing with carb cleaner or something similar. these things were reported to cause the engine to run smoother. any thoughts on this?

Oh, inside the engine.

This idea is called Water Injection, and it's been around for years. The idea is that if your combustion chambers have a harmful amount of carbon deposits, the water (or carburetor cleaner) will get rid of them.

This scheme is what the scientists call "A solution in search of a problem". In other words, it cures a disease you don't have.

Don't do it!

i don't know all the answers but i think that daniel is a pretty reliable source when it comes to maintenance and trouble shooting for max's. but i gotta say that the mod does sound good, just think i'll hold off on it. then again, i'm the type that thinks that my car feels faster after i wash it.

Now here's a person who knows how to SEARCH!

Digging through a year's posts to find out about steam cleaning the INSIDE of an engine. Ambitious.
