can someone tell me what this noise is?
ok so awhile back my car started making this grinding noise when i would push on the brake, so i figured i needed new brakes, just didnt have time to do it. then one day my car got stuck in 2nd gear (i have an auto, it jus wouldnt shift out of 2nd), but the next day it began shifting fine again. i brought it into the mechanic and told them all of this and they did a tranny flush and they said my rear brakes were completely shot but the fronts were ok. got the car back and this horrible grinding noise is still there, only it doesnt do it all the time, once im driving about 15-20 minutes it'll start up again, sometimes its not that loud, sometimes it vibrates the whole car. anyone kno what this can be?

it feels like its coming from somewhere in the front of the car, which is why i originally thought it was the brakes, but now i dont know. and yes its only when i press the brakes

Could it possibly be your Cat Converters Sheild on the exhaust? Did you check that? If you never changed that, usually one of the brackets holding it on breaks casuing the shield itself to viberate like that and it IS a horrible grinding noise. If thats the case, you can pry the sheild off.

ABS wouldn'd make the grinding noise.. If you abs was messed up the light would turn on. You'd still have breaks to stop the car, but you wouldn't get that rapid pulse that abs uses to allow you to control steer when slamming on the breaks.
I believe if the rotors were bad..You'd definetly know. When my rotors went bad or created hot spots...it would feel like the break pedal was moving back and forth when applied pressure.
What about your wheel bearing? Those will cause grinding noise. They start off with a mild grinding noise, so you might be hearing it before it really goes bad.

thanks for all your help guys, im bringing it in this week to see whats wrong with it...i'm almost positive its not the brakes, because i just had them all done. i dunno if its that shield thing jetblack, ill ask my friend who knows a little more then me about this stuff, but thanks for the heads up. so i dunno hopefully it wont be costly....

I actually have the same problem, but not on my max, but on our van... it makes a grinding noise in the front when applying the brakes. I had the front pads replaced and the rotors turned and it went away for about a week... then it came back. Took it back in, they said the pad size was wrong or something, so they did a little work and had to take some of the brake pad material off around the edges and it seemed to fix the problem for about a month, now its back. Crappy pads are probably the issue or crappy service from the shop I took the van too.
