Throttle positioner changes

Throttle positioner changes
Our weather has gotten colder, and my '98 Maxima is back to it's tricks for cold starts I need to tap the gas a couple of times, turn the key, and then feather the throttle a bit until it idles around 800. I don't have a check eng light now, but I have had one go on a couple of months ago, but it mysteriously goes out. I didn't get the codes at that time. Is this a bad throttle positioning device or something ?
2nd question: My stock muffler is rusting. I want to replace it with a quiet muffler for now. Is there a reasonable replacement that bolts in that is cheaper than the stock ?

There are a few things you need to check and do.
1) Clean your throttle body. Instructions can be found here - www.motorvate.ca
2) Check your engine coolant temperature sensor.
3) Check the adjustment and operation of the cold idle circuit. The Haynes shop manual explains how it works and how it's setup.
If all the above is clean and working correctly, your car should start up on the first crank.
