removing pulley off the AC compressor....any difference?

I am interested in removing the pulley off of the AC compressor on my 95 max....does this net any performance gain at all? I never use AC seeing as I only drive at night mostly....anyone seen any performance gain at all? is this easy to do? and what size or part number of belt will i need to run without the AC compressor?

i did this with my old CRX. the compressor was dead and the AC had its own belt so when I go around to replacing them i just didn't put on back on the AC. I didn't notice any difference perfomance wise, but the car was mad slow. However, I did get around 2-3 more MPG, but that car was real efficent so maybe a Maxima would see a 1-2 MPG gain. I can only guess.

well i think it would do some difference cause the crankshaft is conected to the ac by a belt on a maxima and it would reduce resistance cause there would be one less thing being spun so it might add little bit more tork, that's just what i think cause im looking to take off my ac also, i don't use it AT ALL, and i guess i would have to go to like napa and just look for a belt that would fit.

you can just buy the belt made for max's without AC.

all max`s have AC dont they?

AC`s engage with an electric clutch. If AC is off, the clutch is not engaged, and does not steal power from the engine, other than the clutch wheel spinning freely : negligeable.

thats what I though too, but my service manual shows how to replace the acc belt on a 95 max with and without AC and when i got my belt from advanced auto parts, i had a choice btwn AC equipped and non AC equipped belts.

Also, i'm sure the large wheel/pulley attached to the AC compressor has some rotational mass to it. It's pretty big.

so the question still remains, any noticeable difference in performance....i'm lazy so somebody has to try this first and let me know if it works before i go to work on it....

All 4th gen cars sold in North America come with AC.

The minimal "tork" gain wouldnt be worth the effort.

but i don't want to hear any theoretical or logical explanations...because i have learned that cars can be very illogical....has anyone actually done this on their maxima and seen any results? real stories? i would search the forums...but the search feature seems to have been restricted/disabled!?!?! which is why i have to ask questions on now instead of just searching for past results...

Well then how about you be a man and just do it?

Go buy a belt and get to work. YOU tell US how it went.

We want a full write up, with pics and dyno plots. Butt-dyno results are not acceptable.

Do you think that would worth to sweat your tail in the summer just for 1 or 2 Hp ? Unless your A/c is no longer working don t even bother with this. Use the $ 15 toward a y pipe and get some power that way. Good luck with your experiment , and make sure that you can return the belt after you are done with it...

Cars are illogical, or people don't understand what's going on and come up with illogical explanations?

You might notice a difference.. however, removing the AC pulley or belt will result in the AC going bad.
If you are going to do it, you might as well remove the entire assembly to cut down on weight while you are at it. ♀

A friend and I removed the belt from the AC/PS and noticed good gains on the butt dyno, however loss of the power steering wasn't really worth the gains, at least not on a maxima.

You will wish you had the AC the next time your windows are all fogged up.
