Regarding speed limiters

So I finally got some guts today to bring my speedo up to the 115 area. When I got to 115, a limiter kicked in! I thought only GLE's had limiters? And I'm sure it was a limiter, because my tach was only at 4,000rpms in 4th, and I even tried turning o/d off (even though you turn it off at around 126ish). Can someone please refresh my memory as to which models have limiters?

1998 Maxima GXE Fed spec

Thanks,

Dan

GXE = Has speed limiter
SE, GLE = Don't

*There is a way to bypass this limiter...check the FAQ's sticky

You know, I honestly thought I had a speed limiter at around 120, but I read that you have to be in third with Overdrive off and right when it is on the redline, you turn it on. You should go past 120 at that point. I did it several times blasting through Utah. I think I got around 135.

I heard from a little birdy that all GXEs except 5-speed had limiters. None of the SE or GLEs had limiters.

It has to do with the type of tires that came stock, they weren't H rated and shouldn't go past 120.

Not true.

My 1995 GXE with the S&C package (remote keyless, variable wipers, power seat, auto trans, etc...) definitely has a limiter.

Also, if you read the FAQ, it mentions that the ONLY way to know for sure if you have a limiter is to hit the road and go for top speed.

yea, or else you get a check engine light for a faulty "vehicle speed sensor" put it on a switch, and only turn it when you feel the desire to exceed 120 miles per hour. Its a lot less often than you think

so true - I've only used my switched ECU mod once (plus testing runs of course) since I did it about a year ago.

switch is next to the fuse access panel.

Has anyone tried putting one of those boxes that are made to correct the electronic pulses for different gearing and tires. Put that between the speedo and ECU (corrected so the ECU thinks you are going slower). should come up with no ECU fault code and no messing with a switch.

Down side it will be a more $ and a little more effort to install. I expect clearing codes would get old after awhile though.

I did read the whole thread Yes you are correct, that the only way to realy know for sure with the gxe is to go ***** out and drive that fast, but it really doesnt matter too much to me about the speed limiter anyways- why should you be driving that fast? I like to go fast, but it's not the safest, and I've had some less than enjoyable experiences with it in my dads corvette.

The Max at 135 doesn't feel all that great. Been in Bimmers and they feel a lot more stable at that speed.

yea, old 6 series are fun for that, even have a good ammount of punch at high speed. my uncle has a 5 series and x5, both are more confident than a max at high speeds.

Not necesarily, we were going a little over 100 in our corvette (I was very young at the time and my dad was driving) and there was a deer on the side of the road. Well deer are pretty stupid and it decided to jump over the car as we passed by it, the leg went through the drivers door and inside the car. We were ok but the deer died obviously, it was scary.

And you are right, the max doesnt feel the most stable at high speeds. We had a bmw 540i and that car was great,so smooth and fast!

Naw I gotta agree with the Bimmer at high speeds. I rememeber when I was changing duty stations when I first got to germany and had one of the guys give me a ride down to the new base that was 3 hours away. Well he had a 2002 5 series with the M package and that thing floated. He was doing 160 and I was fast asleep. So smooth. Plus I like the way the mirrors adjust when you are backing up. I would have to say my 325 I have in germany beint that it was old still ran smooth

we were talking about 135, and hitting an wall or large objext (i bet if you hit it dead on you would have had bigger issues)
